Wednesday Day #46 2011 2012

CNN students
Hurricane Rina is coming to Mexico and it may hit some tourist areas.    We also learned how Japan is still cleaning up from the 9.0 earthquake that hit them in March.   Hawaii is starting to receive some of the debris from Japan as it has floated towards their islands.  We talked about a “flat tax” and how that would work for their parents and for them.

Students were given 45 minutes to work on their compare and contrast essays.  I was able to proofread about 10 of the rough drafts and offer suggestions for improvement.  The big “theme” for improvement was adding more specific details from each individual story.  Students were and have been strongly encouraged to quote from the stories.

Social Studies -- students had 25 minutes to begin researching and working on their amendment poster.  Students that take the time to pull up the resources found on my web-posting have been finding the power points to be especially helpful.

Science -- they are starting their unit on atoms and other small yet “big” information.

Poetry memorizing and reciting....we had about 8 students perform today.

Singing

Math time -- We are becoming factor masters!!  More work with factoring trees and at the end we worked on using our factoring skills to reduce a fraction.    We also watched a great Brainpop on factoring.
As a team we completed the first 5 problems on tonight’s homework and they were given 10 minutes to work independently.
Here are our notes.
Here is a khan video on finding factoring
On www.ixl.com -- all the K lessons found in “Number Theory” of 5th grade would be great skills to master.

Reading Comprehension and reading for high-stakes testing...we discussed the comprehension skill of putting information into order as you read.  Our short story had a part where they referred to events that occurred prior to the current day discussed in 80% of the story.

On Friday we are watching A Princess Bride, it is PG so we require your written permission.
Here is the document to print up and sign that it is ok for them to watch the movie.  I also included links to sites that will give you a review from a parent’s perspective.

Kind regards,
