Thursday Day 42 of 2011 2012

A "whole lot of shaking" and technology went on today.

The big news...at 10:45 we pretended to have an earthquake and then practiced how we would respond.  Then at 2:41 pm/pst, the big guy upstairs decided to participate in the California Shake Out Day and he gave us a 4.0 earthquake.  We were too caught doing math at the time to notice the shaking that was going on.

We started the day off with CNN students.   We discussed how the Republican debates are starting to get heated and personal.  We also discussed why the Democrats have not had several debates.   We then discussed Greece, making tough budget cuts and the protesting of their people regarding their budget crisis.   Then we contrasted how yesterday they discussed the drought throughout the USA south while flooding continues to plague Guatemala and El Savador.  Today's CNN heroes was a great one.  It talked about Sal Dimiceli,  a man that has dedicated his life to giving back money to those less fortunate.

Technology Thursday --- typing, tons of math, and deciding if how we want to spend next Friday morning after the parade.    Here is what we did today.

Library Time -- it was only 15 minutes long;  Mrs. Klein was awesome and allowed students to show up at lunch time if they were unable to check out their books prior to the earthquake drill.

Earthquake drill -- the students took it seriously which is what I wanted to accomplish.  As a whole I am glad that we practiced this since there were some great ideas that came out of the practice session.

Vocabulary time --- students were broken into teams of five.  They then shared out their amazing vocabulary posters and/or study cards.

Math time -- we reviewed for tomorrow's test.  On last night's practice test the class averaged 85% correct.  There were some challenges on the final four questions which we tried to quickly cover.
Tonight's homework should be even more great practice for tomorrow.
Tonight's homework and answers to tonight's homework can be found at this link.

U.A. time -- they are finishing their order of operations book markers and beginning their fraction keepsake book.

We ended the day with some students working further on the mean, mode, median and range concepts and others working on algebra found in www.ixl.com
