Monday Day 44 of the 2011 2012 school year

If you get a chance, please take a few minutes to read this article that came out this weekend:
A great piece on the importance of reading for enjoyment and how to find great books to read.
Here is what I said on the class’ Facebook account when I posted the article:
The author lays it all on the line...1. He gives you a cornucopia of great resources to find book lists/recommendations, 2. He breaks down that the best way to become a better reader...”Just read”  and 3. You need to role-model in your house how reading is important.

CNN students
39,000 troops will be returning from Iraq by December 31st .   There is some concern about Iran’s influence after we leave.  This will definitely help our domestic budgetary challenges.  Turkey experienced an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude.  We then discussed the European Union and their on going debt challenges and to what extent do the more stable countries bailout their fellow neighboring countries.  Another satellite is falling into Earth and they were unclear where is was landing?  Finally we discussed baseball’s efforts to rid itself of players using chewing tobacco.   Some players feel this is the right thing to do since ballplayers are role-models.  Some players so this was a personal choice and they had the freedom to choose to chew.  This lead to a great conversation about Americans love with freedom and person rights versus a government’s desire to protect the common well-fare of its citizens.

Spelling Pretest
Note the spelling test and vocabulary test will be on a “special” Thursday.  Past test given on Halloween Fridays have not been pretty.
This week's review words

Writing:
We reviewed the ways to write a compare and contrast essay.  Students were then given 35 minutes to begin writing their rough draft in class.   3/4th of the students choose to diligently work and will less homework while the other 1/4th  chose to have more homework.
Rough draft is due on Wednesday morning

1st Trimester Math Assessment
Student did not have to specially study for this assessment.  It was a reflection on how well they have retained the math concepts covered in the first 9 weeks of the trimester.  This took on average about 70 minutes to complete.

P.E. -- they were outside in this beautiful sunny weather.

Discuss this week’s Bill of Rights / amendment assignment
Each student was given a poster paper and assigned one of the 10 amendments from our Bill of Rights.   The students will be given time in class to research what their Amendment means and create a poster that either defines, symbolizes or explains the meaning of their assigned amendment.

Prepare for the week..
We used Luigi’s day planner and we practiced writing and prioritizing this week’s homework assignments.
Students had about 20 minutes to work on homework, study for tomorrow’s science test and work on www.IXL.com
Friday -- We have  about a 2 hour gap between the end of the Halloween parade until lunch time on Friday.  Since students minds are often on scary things, soon acquiring large amounts of sugar and it being Friday, we are going to watch a movie during that 2 hour period.
I have chosen A Princess Bride.  It is PG so I do require your written permission your son/daughter may watch the movie.
Here is the document to print up and sign that it is ok for them to watch the movie.  I also included links to sites that will give you a review from a parent’s perspective.
