Wednesday #128 2012-2013

Wednesday
Day 128 of Week 30

Don’t forget, tonight at 6:30 a Camp Arroyo’s naturalist will be here to show a slide show and take your questions.  If you can’t attend, I’ll send out the slideshow.

We began the day with the chapter 15 test.  Because Miss Sandy is awesome they have already been graded and they are in www.engrade.com Ask your son/daughter to log in and show you how they did.

We then continued working on the final pre assessments prior to state testing.

We then correct preposition work for the last two evening.

We also went over how to solve this chapter’s basic algebra lessons.  The key thing to understand, tonight’s homework and tomorrow night’s homework is not just about knowing the correct answer.  It really is a lesson in correctly solving the equation using the fundamental properties of algebra.

We had a buddies activity where we made Rechenka's Eggs.  Beautiful drawings and water colors make for a great art project.

Coupe-Shaw 4th grade science review.

We had projects.  We have a recurring theme where students need to add more “because” to their sections where it challenges them to go back and pull out specific details from their books.  It is teaching them to prove their analysis or idea.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Tuesday #127 2012-2013

Tuesday
Day 127 of Week 30
Sorry for the long break between posts.  With the rollout of the new technology there has been many district meetings and also time spent figuring them out and making the class ready.

On Friday we began utilizing the Chromebooks.  We used them a tad bit on Monday and in earnest today.  So far it has been great with the students respecting them and staying on task as we try to modernize some of what we are doing.

Today in technology lab the students worked more with learning how to compute %’s and sharpening their focus on what areas to revisit in regards to our math.  The students converted all of their math tests into % and then could focus on tests that scored less than 80%.

Having figured out what areas to work on, they then began practicing using www.ixl.com

We then did some work on www.scootpad.com

Finally we took our “make your own conclusion to the story” exercise from last week and we are sharing them as a class.   One of the things that excites me about the new technology is being able to share their writing with their peers beyond just with myself.

After technology we focused on our math review as our chapter test is tomorrow.  Students really need to practice and review tonight how to convert subtraction problems into addition problems.

We then did some algebra practice for the rest of the week’s homework since some students were getting a head start on it.

Preposition work will be reviewed on Wednesday.

Science with Mrs. Cargo -- plant cells versus animal cells.

Coupe/Shaw -- 4th grade science review

Math/Art w/ Mrs. Cho

Then the end of the day.

Tomorrow night is the informational meeting at 6:30 where a naturalist from Camp Arroyo will come out to show a slide presentation and answer your questions.  If you can’t attend, I can send you the slideshow after tomorrow night and I would love to answer your questions.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Monday #121 2012-2013

Monday
Day 121 of week 29

A new student joined our class.  We now officially have 29 amazing awesome students!!

Also all of the technology stuff will be delivered on Thursday the 21st.  Today they installed the Apple T.V. device that will allow me to “smartboard” from wherever in the room.  I love the idea of sitting next to some of the more spirited students and leading our math discussions from there.

P.E. (push-ups?)

Johnny Tremain -- Johnny moves on with his life and finds a job and a place to stay.  He will be bunking up with his friend, Rab, and he will be delivering newspapers.  He also had another run-in with mean Mr. Lyte.

Book projects -- our first Hobbit day.   Both students delivered solid performances and created work that at times displayed that they clearly had read the book and were developing that important skill of analyzing and/or having an opinion based upon facts/observations read in their book.
One boy created a poem that captured all of the main character’s from the book and it rhymed.  It is always cool when a project brings “ooohs” and “woooooow” from the students.
As a reminder every student receives feedback at the time we conclude their presentation and then I send the student a personalized email with specific feedback and suggestions for revision.

Math:
Integer chapter -- negative/positive and the distance away from zero.
We also discussed our most used integer phrases in real life: withdrawal, deposit, check, ATM, temperature, etc..
Three lessons tonight for homework however they do not require actual arithmetic, rather the students need to think through the positive and negative integer and what their value is.  Tonight is one where there will be very little “work shown”

More preposition work.

Spelling pretest for the week. Click here for the words.

Next Wednesday night (3/27/13): Camp Arroyo will be here to show you their awesome presentation and answer your questions.
**If you know for sure that your son/daughter will not be attending camp (May 14th-17th), please let us know ASAP.  We will then make arrangements to ensure that your son/daughter experiences a week of enrichment while at DES.
***Know that the school would love and desires your son/daughter attend camp.  It really is a great learning experience both scholastically and socially.  Therefore if you need to work out some sort of tuition plan the school is committed to work with you.  Please contact Ms. McGovern as your earliest convenience to discuss specifics.

The 1st week after Spring Break all the camp paperwork will be sent home.  Those that require medicines to be brought in should be aware that the camp and the district require doctor signatures and prior authorization.

What is the deal with the end of the year?  What brought about the recent changes?  What was the strategy behind things?   If you can, please come to the April 22nd year-end planning meeting at 2:10 in room C-7.  The entire 5th grade team will be there to explain the dates, answer your questions and then assist with finding parent “project-leads” for some of the year-end activities.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Thursday, #119 2012-2013

Thursday
Day 119 of week 28
Pi = 3.14
Today can be written as 3.14 therefore every March 14th is Pi Day.

So we found some time this afternoon to learn about circumference, radius, diameter, area of a circle and EAT Pi’e!!!

The morning time we spent a little extra time seeing if Johnny Tremain was going to literally hang for allegedly stealing silver from mean old Mr. Lyte.  Ask your son/daughter about Johnny’s fate and what did and what they think will happen to him.

Then we corrected today’s grammar lessons and collected our week long journey into reviewing prepositions.

At the library we were an especially talkative group today :(

We had an amazing book project completed yesterday.  Especially her first project she did a great job of referring back to actual examples and pages within the book to substantiate her opinion or synthesize.   She also brought an excited murmur to the crowd with her Google presentation skills when she made them interactive for the wordsearch and crossword puzzle.

Today’s presentation had someone who could have maybe went a tad further in referencing back to her book to substantiate opinions or ideas.  However artistically she did a fine job laying out her websites and making the website easy to manage.

We then had science with Mrs. Cargo.  The biggest news?  The science test has been moved until Wednesday.
They also have the Ph experiment worksheet due Tuesday.
The mixture worksheet due Tuesday
Shorts answers answers due Tuesday:
1.  “What are the properties of some common substances?
2. “What are chemical reactions?”
3. “How are chemical and physical properties used?”

We then reviewed last night’s math homework and worked on applying this chapter’s mathematics into common everyday uses.  We calculated tips, taxes, and discounts.
The chapter 17 test will be on Friday.  Students have been doing great on the homework and in-class time therefore please make sure they “study” tonight and re-review their homework/lessons.

Math/Art

Finally we spent the last part of the day learning more about Pi, associated mathematical formulas and finally we ended the day enjoying Pi’e.

Have a great evening.

Monday, #117 2012-2013

Monday
Day 117 of week 28

District email was acting weird this weekend.  Allegedly it was rejecting emails and on my end I could not log into it for a significant period of the weekend.
The entire district will be moving over to the Google sponsored email beginning in August.  Therefore you can use the hubbardron AT  dublinusd. net
No need to use dpride and Google keeps those things up pretty much 24/7

Report card information:
In regards to the sections of the report regarding grammar, improving writing, and various other grammar assessments.  We have about four to five students who have been utilizing their time and their goal sessions wisely and have been putting in time on www.scootpad.com   Therefore I gave what was essentially a pretest regarding those sections of the report card to see who could earn a 3 on the report card.  There was a direct statistical cause/effect between those that had www.scootpad.com and those who waste time or choose not to.  The point of this story? Twofold: 1.  Those that www.scootpad.com WILL improve their grammar and vocabulary knowledge.  2.  We have not taught all those lessons in class time yet therefore it is reasonable to assume they may have scored low.

Today -- more Johnny Tremain;  He is trying to deal with life as a silversmith prodigy to existing with an inoperable hand.

Reports --
We had some really creative and thorough reports on Friday and today.  Ryley did some creative, “outside the box” presentations that proved he enjoyed and learned from his book.  The class today was able to enjoy his “radio advertisement” that he put together and they were still talking about his art/symbolism creation that he showed us on Friday.  We also had Meghan amaze us with a well-written, well-defended and creative “classical” book reports.  She did an amazing job with stating her opinion or analysis and then pulled out concrete examples from the books themselves.  Wow!!  Colin did a well-written and solid book report about the Hardy Boys.  Similar to Meghan’s it was in the more classical style book report however he worked hard on each section making sure he had analysis or synthesized an idea and then went and made referenced sections/parts of the book that lead to that idea.  He also had the best acrostic poem that I have seen in many years.  He used the letters to make a statement that told about the story in the order they occurred in the story!!

Math --
% fractions and decimals
How are they all related?  They can all be described as having equivalent values.
We also practiced 50%, 25% and 10% of a number.  I shared how I am grateful that Grandma Hubbard taught me to pick up 10% at an early early age.

Fraction T.L.C. with Mrs. Cargo
Students that did not earn an 80% or higher on our fraction units are working independently on www.ixl.com or khanacademy while Mrs. Cargo will be teaching a 8 lesson unit “refresh” or “reanalyze” regarding fractions for those that scored 79% or lower.

Spelling pretest

Creating our own science study guides -- we began this on Friday.  Teams of 6 are working on creating their own study guide and their own key to help them study for Friday’s test.  The students collaborate, discuss correct answers and debate what would be an appropriate or reasonable question(s) that would be given by Mrs. Cargo.

Day 113 of week 27

Technology time...
Monthly Star Reading Assessment
Completing a writing assessment
Working more on our self-directed goals therefore studying our prior math test, Engrades, and catching up on missed Brainpops.

We then reviewed the past tense verb handout from last night.  This is assessed on Friday’s Theme 3 test.

We then had Skylar present her book projects.  She did a information landen powerpoint and then she showed us a poster and game-board.  It was all impressive stuff.

Related at lunchtime, we had an optional popcorn and cookie snacks as we watched Kat’s 23 puppet play.  She did a dramatic recreation of our her book and literally had up to 5 puppets interacting at one time.

Math --
Multiplication review.
Students that had a few hiccups and/or challenges were the handful of students that chose NOT to show their work.  The review sections are multiple choice however for about 75% of the problems students should still be showing their work.
**Tonight’s homework is regarding division and showing your work should be the norm.

Science with Mrs. Cargo -- more work with metals, base, acids, etc.

Math/Art -- tests were returned from last Thursday.  Students need your signature to acknowledge they showed you the test.

Science review time also took place.

With the abundance of head colds and allergies we have run out of tissues.  If anyone is willing to donate tissues that would be great.  I promise the students are not wasting them, we just have battled many runny noses this school year.

We hope to have some definitive news regarding our technology pilot group in the very near future.  It may require us having an informal meeting after school next week for those that can attend.  More details will be forthcoming as I have another 90+ minute meeting on Thursday afternoon.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard
