Day 173 of week 37

Technology Thursday --
Click here to see all the things that we covered and learned today.
The big thing we covered was taking the district survey, watching two videos about interest, banking, & credit and catching up on our CNN Students.

Manners Tea ---
The students truly rose to the occasion with everyone dressing respectfully and more importantly everyone using their best behavior(s).
A special thank you to our two room moms who helped spearheaded and met numerous times to make this big challenge a reality.

After manners the students watched the four videos from our Open House.  I took 1,200 photos that our students took w/ the five classroom cameras during the four days at camp and tried to make a condensed essence of our 5th grade camp.

After lunch we watched the 4th grade egg drop competition.

We watched and discussed the entire Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover movie.

Finally we ended the day with a circle time where we discussed our favorite parts of the manners tea and we shared our dream for the first day of summer break.

**Reminder****
The final exam of the states and capitals is tomorrow morning.
We will also present our CNN and Lewis and Clark projects in the morning after the final exam.

We end the day w/ our family life discussion.  So if you are inclined use tomorrow’s classroom discussions to have a meaningful follow-up conversation with your son/daughter tomorrow afternoon.

Ron Hubbard

Day 171 of week 37

8 more days to go and we have many opportunities for learning and fun ahead.

Students are working on their Lewis & Clark projects, CNN projects, revising their persuasive essays, showing off their goal folders and having various art projects up and ready to present.   Their homework is to have everything ready to present to the public at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday night.

We also did some more lessons on manners today.   Elbows on the table?  Cutting with a knife & fork -- do you have to switch hands ‘every’ time?  Which direction do we pass the food at the table?  Can we ever pass it the other way?

We also did this great silhouette art exercise today.  Your challenge will be to find which silhouette is your child’s tomorrow night.  Believe me, it will not be as easy as you think.

They do also have the final exam in the states and capitals on Friday.

Here is the rest of vida loca:

Monday, #166 2011 2012

Monday, May 21st
Day 166 of week 36

CNN Students --   Students learned and wrote about the G8 Summit and why economies of the other 7 countries matter so much to President Obama and the USA.    Since we missed Chen Guangcheng’s story last month, we caught up on his amazing escape and the fears that arise when you protest in a country that does not have a Bill of Rights.   Finally students learned and listened to the song Taps as it “celebrated” its 150 anniversary.

Seaman -- the Corp of Discovery is leaving Fort Catsup and heading back to St. Louis.

In the documentary on Lewis and Clark, the group is at the exact area and they are anxiously beginning their triumphant return home.  The anticipation is having the Corp of Disc., especially Lewis, act different as they steal from the Indians, almost destroy an Indian village and he over-reacts with one of the crewman.

Math -- Taxes.  We went over the math and art projects for the week while also delving deeply into Federal and State taxes.  If you have time please talk with your son/daughter about taxes -- specifically the Federal and State income taxes.  As we worked through how much we give to our government the students were starting to think beyond their other everyday expenses and how little $$ would be left over.
Here are our notes.

States and Capitals -- Mr. Hubbard’s class averaged a 90% on the 2nd states and capitals test!! This A average had our class ranked 1st out of the three fifth grade classes.  We had five success stories where students raised their 50% or lower score into an 80% or higher!!!  The key to memorizing?  “Repeat to remember and remember to repeat.”

Being inspired in our kick butt country, the power of math and the imagination of science --- we spent 20 minutes discussing the Curiosity Science Lab that will be landing on Mars in August 2012.
Here is the access to the videos that we watched today and will be watching over the next few weeks.

Follow up on Summer School:
Here is the requested information:
Location:  Fallon School
When:  June 15 through July 6 (no school on July 4th)
Hours:  8:00-12:30 p.m.

Summer School possibilities --  They will be offering a 5th grade going into 6th grade summer school this summer.  It will be taking place at Fallon School.    If you do not have much planned or the resources to have your child participating in mind enriching activities during the summer please strongly consider having your son or daughter attend summer school.   Sitting around watching television or playing video games will only increase or create a learning gap.   I have the summer school applications and I have a limited amount of “jump to the head of the line” applications for those serious about summer school.
Not sure about pulling the trigger on summer school and you don’t have a “plan” for summer, please read through the links below:
In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers he outlines that students that have a summer spent doing enrichment based activities (summer school, museums, science camps, etc..) actually may experience “more” learning than during the school year.   I would recommend getting the book or reading these links since I am giving you a super short review of what the findings show.

On Sunday, May 20th, I had the pleasure to listen and watch Jared M. perform his award winning story for all those who attended the 5th Grade Short Story gala at the Oakland Library.
Here is the link to Jared's both topical and historical fiction based story.
You can see from this link that over 400 stories were submitted so to take place 3rd place is a great honor.

Thursday, #164 2011 2012

Thursday, May 17th
Day 164 of week 35

Technology Thursday -- every single student met with me and we discussed their Lewis and Clark projects.  The students then had 75 minutes to begin researching and working on their projects.  It was great to have a small room super quite as 28 students were plugging away researching and learning about topics that they choose and is not a multiple choice test.

We then came back and worked on their Lewis and Clark poems and begin researching the CNN-Students project.

Wells Middle School math assessment -- Wells created a 5th grade assessment to have an idea to where to strategically place students next year while also seeing who qualifies to try and test out of 6th grade math.

We then watched the Lewis and Clark documentary.  Today’s portion had the Corp of Discovery “make” it to the Pacific Ocean.  They have now decided to winter slightly in-land off the coast before triumphantly heading home.

At the end of the day we were blessed with a visit from one of the librarians from our Dublin Library.  She explained all of the various reading competitions, the Mayor’s Challenge and other shows & activities that the library will be putting on this summer.
Click here to see what is happening at our local library.

Write up #1 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #2 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #3 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #4 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.

Wells Field walking field trip is tomorrow:
Students #11, #12, #13, 19, #24 and #27 all need to return their field trip form first thing tomorrow morning.
We begin walking at 8:30’ish.  We return to DES around noon’ish.
It will be cool, yet refreshing in the morning, and the walk back it may be in the 70’s.  Therefore have your son/daughter wear comfortable shoes, eat a healthy breakfast since we are walking 2+ miles tomorrow and layers of clothes.
We will be eating lunch at DES therefore they do not have to pack a special lunch.
Wells Middle School will be offering their snack bar services to our kids.  However kids do need to bring cash in order to purchase from the snack bar.   They do NOT have to buy from the snack bar so it is only if you would like to hook them up or not.

Tuesday, #162 2011 2012

Tuesday, May 15th
Day 162 of week 35

If you haven’t already, please return the large packet with the all of the field trip forms.  We have our first field trip on Friday (our walk to Wells Middle School).

We began the day with our second math exam.  The students finished with time to spare and I can happily report that some of them made the effort to relook over the test prior to calling it a day.

After the students completed the math testing, they were broken into teams and we participated in a 5th grade science review competition.   Tomorrow’s final state testing will be on the 5th grade science expectations.

The students did have class with Mrs. Wimott today and they did more 5th grade science review.  Mrs. Wilmott assigned them 30 to 45 minutes of reading through their science books tonight for homework.  She guessed only 75% of the student would actually do it.  Encourage your students to prove Mrs. Wilmott wrong!!

We had a 20 minute block before lunch and the kids had been now hit with a test and 90 minutes of science test prep.  Therefore we enjoyed the following heartwarming non-fiction movie about a young 9 year old named Caine.  Click here for more information and if you would like to donate to his scholarship fund.:

They ended the day with Mrs. Cargo’s class.  I can confirm while they discussed health topics it was not under the guise of science state test prep.

Great news...Jared’s story was selected 3rd place in the Berkeley Short Story competition that all of the students participated in early this school year.
You can read his story -- The Hoarder Treasure right here.

You can see from this link that over 400 stories were submitted so to take place 3rd place is a great honor.

You can also see on this link that Dublin Elementary has earned distinction prior (i.e. see 2009 winnerS) and so have the Merrill family.

Monday, #161 2011 2012

Monday, May 14th
Day 161 of week 35

The last week of testing began today.  So we found a balance between moving on and reviewing a few skills.

We started the day off with circle-time.  Students shared how they spoiled their mom and/or grandma(s) for Mother’s Day.        In theory you received the wordle Mother’s Day card and the bookmark this weekend.  It is funny how many kids shared that one of their gifts that they gave mom was “some peace and quiet” or “let mom relax with her own thoughts and no interruptions.”     We then shared a discussion regarding manners.  Students shared what were their some of the “big and important” manners at their individual homes.  Students shared out:
listening, thank you & please, chewing w/ your mouth closed and dressing based upon the situation.
Students then shared which states and capitals have been giving them the most trouble when they study.  The Carolinas, the “whole East Coast” and the Dakotas were the top responses.

We then read more on Seaman.  In today’s reading the group is struggling to make it through the great Rocky Mountains and food is starting to get low.   The group is getting desperate and they have started eating candles, their horses and stone soup.

We then watched some of the Lewis and Clark dvd and we saw the Corp survive the mountains, just barely and meet up with the Nez Perce Indians.

Math -- we reviewed questions that had to do with percentages, converting fractions into decimals/%’s and adding fractions.

Students then had P.E.

We ended the day completing some paperwork for Wells administration, discussing how the class average for the first states & capitals test was an 82%  and getting ready for the week.    Students scoring 80% or below are to have their parents sign and return their states and capitals test results.  Once again it is just a matter of dedicating time to memorizing the states/capitals as the class average was 82%.

Reminder that at 6:30 p.m. tonight you can meet with our district administrators and have a say in the skills and attributes that our next principal with all have.   The meeting will be taking place either in the M.P. room or room A-9.   The letter our son/daughter brought home on Friday afternoon has all of the details.
