Day 151 of Week 33
Monday, April 30, 2012

THANK YOU!!  I can not express my gratitude at all of your generosity towards me during this year’s teacher appreciation week.   Everyone is so darn giving that if I am not careful, I may put back on  all 18 pounds that I have lost since January.   I hope you realize that my entire family is really really appreciative of all your largess that you have spoiled upon me this school year.  THANK YOU.

Today is our final full week before next week’s state testing begins.

The spelling words for the week are all Lewis and Clark related.  Click here for words.

Here are today’s math notes:

FYI -- the list of students “missing learning opportunities” started off at ZERO on Monday and it has quickly grown this week.  Summer is not here yet, we still need to push forward and maximize are time here on planet earth.

As we move into May and June, we have many great fun activities planned for 5th grade.  However these fun things are earned through hard work and making the effort to learn the information expected by the state of California.  Students with missing work on the day(s) of these activities will use the activity time to complete the learning they have missed (e.g. a student will not attend  the 5th grade BBQ when then have not completed work related to our state standards).

Day 147 of Week 32
Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Persuasive letters -- students were given 45 minutes to work and type out their persuasive letters.
While those students worked on their letters, students were able to work on “missed learning opportunities” or tonight’s homework.   Then they traded spots after 45 minutes, therefore each child was able to work 45 minutes towards their homework AND  45 minutes towards their persuasive essay.

Science -- due tomorrow pages 72, 74 and 75 and they should be getting their test signed.

Math -- more review with fraction multiplication;  for many of the students the cobwebs are coming off and they getting a handle again on fraction multiplication.
The big emphasis was showing all your work on the 15 problems.
Here are our notes for the last two days.

Circle time - a quick review of their nature names that they were given during Outdoor Education time.  Then we all verbalized our May testing goals and what were we prepared to accomplish.  There was much cheering done and everyone received their “I am a champion!” wrist band.

Cargo -   due tomorrow page 336 1-10

After school meeting -- we discussed the upcoming 5th grade events and creating “action committees” to handle the 5th grade BBQ, games on BBQ day, and promotion events.   So we now have “project managers” for each of those teams however they are looking for volunteers, brainstormers and helpers.   If you were unable to attend today’s meeting, no big whoop, you can still help out.  Just fill out this form and return it ASAP so we can give your information to the “project manager.”

Monday #141 2011 2012

Day 141 of Week 31
Monday, April 16, 2012

It was the day before outdoor education week combined with following our Spring Break, therefore we did not begin any new unit.  Rather we allowed the students to complete their final math and language arts assessments.

The students that finished early were allowed to read for enjoyment, work on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com, work on www.ixl.com , and study for their states and capitals exams.

We also had a circle time where the students had an opportunity to evaluate and share how their spring breaks were.  We had a bunch of “10’s” and then a few “1’s” thrown into the mix.

Finally we ended the day answering questions about camp, handing out a camp packet and finally revealing the cabin groups and the adventure groups.

Remember the End of Year planning meeting is Tuesday, 24 room C-7 @ 2:05.

Just a quick heads up about the cabin and adventure groups.
The fifth grade teachers take very seriously the making of the cabin and adventure groups .   It is no exaggeration that the fifth grade team spent close to six hours working as a team creating the cabin and adventure groups.  Each student from all three classes had an opportunity to complete a survey where they told us their top three choices would be for hanging out with at cam.   They were also able to tell us of any concerns or suggestions regarding who to be placed with while at camp.

Therefore we have to factor in chaperone placements & matching their kids in their group when possible (e.g. fathers can NOT be in charge of their daughter’s cabin), then work off the survey information and then also factor in the chemistry/behavior challenges that would go into the groups.  We can not make a team of angels and then make a team of rowdies that would be unfair to the chaperones, naturalists and the rest of the students in the groups.   As you can imagine, it is a rather complex and intricate process where moving one person one place can then mess up the numbers or the chemistry of another group.    So all students received at least one of their three choices in the survey during their cabin/adventure groups while the integrity of a “learning environment” was also kept.

The bottom line -- this has all been well thought through for numerous hours furthermore Camp Arroyo has our final list.  They have already begun the process of printing and making team branded exercises based on the selected groups/teams.   Finally a change is never “quick” and it involves often having a direct effect on X amount of other students.

Final camp information:

  • Please considering mailing a letter to camp.  It helps w/ homesickness and the kids think it is super cool.
  • All students report tomorrow morning to the multipurpose room with camp gear and a disposable lunch at 10:30 a.m.
  • Chaperones please arrive at 10:30 a.m. Remember a disposal lunch for yourself.
  • Field trip drivers arrive to DES at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday at Camp Arroyo at 1:00.
  • All parents Pick-up on Friday is 1:20. Students are dismissed upon arrival.
  • A reminder packet of information was sent home today with your student.
      • All students not attending camp must attend school this week.

Math -- division review.  Students are strongly encouraged to use the “stacking” method.  It cause far less confusion for those that our dividing.  It also encourage students to “have fun” with division.

Grammar -- we reviewed our lesson on prepositional phrases.

Non-Fiction reading practice and science review -- we worked in teams to come up with perfect answers.

Cargo rotation.

Here is the link of my recommendations and reminders.

Does your son or daughter want to be in a quick school video?  Are they a morning person?  For tomorrow’s “We are champions” assembly tomorrow, I need to produce two 30 second videos for the assembly.

  • One is about the importance of exercising during May testing.
  • The other video is about the importance getting a long night of sleep  during May testing.

Kids interested in participating in the video should show up at room C-5 tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m.
If your son/daughter can get there by 7:45 and if they want to act, then have them look over this script.
People choosing to act, must show up in “regular” school clothes.  If they are dressing up outrageous for the “Dress up for Autism Day,” then they will need to bring a change of clothes for after the filming.
