Day 27 9/29

Thursday 9/29

It was a productive Technology Thursday.

Here is what we did in the lab today.
Another session of Singapore math taught by Kahn Academy. They also watched a video of where Kahn showed how to do a much larger division problem.  They also played around with some brain-science games.

We also discussed today the need to protect your passwords here at school and at home.  I discussed how the stakes and importance get much higher in protecting your accounts as you get older.  I also laid out for our “potential” hackers how the district and latter on in life the police take this seriously and there is nothing funny about hacking into someones account.

After technology we went for our weekly library visit.   Many of the students struggled with treating Mrs. Klein with respect.    Many students were talking amongst themselves, not facing her as she read a story and just shouting out responses.  So we returned from library and I reiterated that we are learning community and that we treat each other with respect.  I also talked about our need to respect each other and our need to be “learning heroes” ;  So we are all going to write Mrs. Klein apology letters, due on Monday, and we are all going to do our part to help remind each other of our obligations as learners.

Universal Access time --- more fun with factoring and factoring effectively.

Math time -- dividing with zeros in the final answer.  working on rounding.
Here is today’s notes.

We heard another two heritage stories and some people shared how their family stories were somewhat similar.

We then worked on our power speaking.  Many students came up and gave a short speech.  Mrs. Silva, who ran this lesson,  was very impressed with the quality of the speeches and the extraordinary poise many of the students displayed.

***please note, I sent to you the very important typing information .   If you would like your child to receive more intensive typing practice, I strongly recommend this class.

***social studies reading will be delayed until Tuesday.

Day 26 on 9/28

Toomer's Corner covered in toilet paper.

First note, keep those kids sleeping, washing hands, full of fluids and eating healthy.  Various virus are starting to be passed around the class.  Fevers, coughs, and really sore-throats are making their way around C-5.  Remember the school asks that your child be fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

Today’s happenings and talking points:

We finished the first of the two stories about the Auburn and Alabama rivalry, traditions, Toomer’s trees and fandom.  We began the 2nd story and we are learning more about the fan that killed the 80+ year old trees.

We then did some intensive math training.  So intense that we did a double session of math.
Here are our double session notes:

After our first math session, they went off to science where they are learning more about the universe and outer space.  Homework tonight:  Page 168 and 169

We returned for another math division jam session.
Here are the movies that we watched regarding division.
Here is the 2nd movie that we watched.

After math they went to singing.  For the first time this year the class earned a “super” for their exceptional respectfulness and energy during singing class!!

After singing we went over our vocabulary work.  Some people are really making some exceptional, dare I say extraordinary, vocabulary poster cards.  Vanessa, Stacy, Carli, Trevor, Drew and Jared have really stood out these last two weeks in making some cool and information posters.

We then went over some social studies.  We are continuing our work on the Constitution.  So we covered types of government, leaders and what exactly do we practice because it is not pure democracy.

Finally at the end of the day we prepped for our Power Speaking presentations and we heard some first hand accounts of people immigrating into the U.S.A.

Please please return those heritage forms ASAP.

Day 25 -- September 27, 2011

 Tuesday 9/27

I was out yesterday since Devin acquired a virus.   He is back therefore I made my triumphant return today.

Today has two rotations so it went by pretty quickly when combined with our Topic 3 test.

We reviewed last night’s math homework.  We then proceeded to take topic 3’s test.

Then the class went to Mrs. Wilmott’s for science.  They continue to cover outer space.

We then completed our math tests and/or worked on science/math homework.

With math today, we covered basic division.  Again we are using some of the best practice techniques covered by the group from Alameda that went out and researched  what better performing countries were doing in relationship to math.
Here is how we began teaching division, click here for the lesson.
Here is a more detailed lesson.
Here are the notes from today and yesterday.

In universal access time today, groups discussed prime numbers versus composite numbers.    The idea of composite numbers versus prime numbers will be a key compenent in 5th grade math and beyond.

Day 22 of 2011 2012

Day 22

I’m back :)

Today was our “Technology Thursday”
Click here to see all of the exciting things that we did today.
We practiced typing,.
We worked on Chapter 3 multiplication or reviewed the first four chapters of the book.
We then watched a great Khan video that broke down the usefulness of the Singapore math.
Finally we tried our hand at being a legislator and/or President of the United States.

We then had library time.  Ms. Klein did a great lesson on how to use our schools “destiny” system to look up books.  They covered the different ways to look up books.

Then we had our first buddy visits with Mrs. Lombardo’s kindergarten class.   Please ask your son/daughter about their new buddy.   They did a “team building” exercises with their buddy today and completed our time with them by reading stories to them.

After buddies we worked on some more math.  We are gearing up for the chapter 3 test that will take place on Tuesday.
Click here for the last two days of math notes.

The kids did have Universal Access time with Mrs. Cargo.

We ended the day with another 25 minute math “jam” session.

We ended the day with Mrs. Silva kicking off her “Heritage Project.”   So please look for that brown handout.  It contains more information about the project and it does have your student needing to interview you or whoever knows a ton about your family history.

I apologize for not note yesterday, I had meetings combined with my darn ear that refuses to get better.

Day 19

Happy Monday to everyone.

Here is what went down in room C-5 today.

Spelling pretest

Mini-Dear time

Lesson on how to effectively read non-fiction stories.
We covered author’s perspective, the context of why the author is writing and why do people choose to write non-fiction.
This week’s reading is focusing on two articles that cover the Auburn/Alabama rivalry and the damage that was done to the famous trees located in the city of Auburn.
Click here for the ESPN Mag. article
Click here for the Sports Illustrated article
Here are pre-notes on what do we know about the University of Alabama and Auburn, the state of Alabama and college football.   Here are the notes.

We will begin reading our 1st story tomorrow.

Math:
We continued our journey into using best practices towards multiplication.
We also re-reviewed the specific multiplication properties.
 Here are the notes.

Here are the official “best practice” lessons that we are following:

click onto document 2

After math, the students had P.E. with Ms. L

Finally we ended the day with me modeling what they should write into their day-planner as I filled in the day planner of an absent student.   Therefore once again their day-planner should be perfect considering I modeled it in real time and I have to write slow for my handwriting to be legible.

I then did a discussion about if someone read for only 10 minutes a day for the first 4 weeks of school they would have read 280 minutes so far (4.67 hours) while if someone read for 30 minutes per day for the first 4 weeks of school they would have read 840 minutes so far (14 hours).
For the entire school year at that rate -- the 10 minute person would read 41 hours
For the entire school year at that rate --the 30 minute person would read 122 hours

Reading, reading anything, is similar to exercising your brain.
Read about it here.

Finally Trevor at the end of the day showed a really cool game found on www.brainpop.com  You can be the President of the U.S.A. for the day.  It asks you a series of questions and you choose how you will respond.  It is basically one of those “choose your own adventures” that we all loved as kids but now it is on-line.
