Monday, #29 2012 2013 (10/08/12)

Today was all about "large" division!
Monday, October 8, 2012

It was a fun filled Monday....

We started the day by finishing our thank you letters to the Lawrence Livermore Lab.  Students that completed that were allowed to read silently.

After that we completed our spelling pretest for the week.

We then did an extra long session of Lewis and Clark.
Today’s big events were:

  • The Continental Divide
  • Seeing the origin of the Missouri River
  • Trying desperately to find the Shoshone Indians
  • Sacagawea and Chief Cameahwait
We discussed what the “Great Coincident” was all about.  We will now catch up to this lucky even in our Seaman book.

Math:
Today’s big lesson, via Miss Sandy, why estimating well is actually taking a shortcut.
With many of the students “falling for” the guess & check or the stacking method, the strategies biggest challenge is when students guess in small increments (e.g. using only 10, 100, 1000 instead of 40, 70, 900 etc..) since these can take a long vertical path on the homework.

However we rationalized that if you estimated and generally rounded down  before working on the problem you can use your estimation as a starting point for your guess & check or stacking method.

We did two examples of this today.  Click here to see our two examples.

We completed our day with taking the time to write up our homework into our day planners and to begin working on that homework.

Finally I did print up a high level progress report for everyone using www.engrade.com   This allowed students to see how they were doing with their classwork and their homework so far.   At this point about 60% of the class has logged in, set up their account and looked at the account at least once.

Class Dojo -- I also sent a report that captured all of the month of September.  It now allows for the system to have more than one email so if you would like to be added please shoot me an email.

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard
