Monday, #44 2012 2013 (10/29/12)

I”m back.

Sorry for the almost week long delay in responding.  I developed an ear-infection on Tuesday night/Wednesday so I was out ill on Wednesday, had to play catch up while not feeling 100%.

Here is today’s low down along with this week’s learning objectives.

Quick point: my goal this week is to be realistic regarding Halloween, the festivities that go with the holiday and also the negative effects that go with a sugar-based diet.   Therefore students do not have Thursday night homework while they also received additional time in class today (35 minute homework time + the usual 45 minutes after lunch to plan out the week & work).  As it frequently plays out, many students used that time to their advantage by asking me clarifying questions and staying on task.  While a smaller %had to be consistently reminded to not socialize and get their work done.  Therefore if your son/daughter has not completed 60+ minutes of work already you can know how they chose to spend their time.

P.E. today -- they are volleyballing it right now.

CNN Students...
Topics they wrote and discussed:  Hurricane Sandy, Tsunami watch on Sunday due to a Canadian earthquake, some biography information about both presidential candidates, electoral college and a Supreme Court case where owners of copyrights would lessen a person’s ability to resell books, music, cars and DVDs.

States and Capitals -- study guide was given out.  Students, once again, had the entire process explained and the actual test that they will take was shown on the smartboard.  “Repeat to remember; remember to repeat” is the recipe to hold information into the long term memory bank.  Therefore a little bit of studying each week will make May so much less stressful.

Seaman
Today we read the complete chapter that discusses how the Corp barely survived making it through the Bitterroot Mountains.  We finished this tense chapter discussing & reading about the “diarrhea” challenges the team dealt with after hardly eating for 12 days and being feed root vegetables and berries.

Math:
Students have to complete a mini project where they add up the total calories for a catered meal.  The final task is to create their own meal and calculate the sum calories.   Due on Wednesday

Today we had time to work in pairs and practice for tomorrow’s chapter 5 test.  So tonight’s homework is the continuation of the practice test they received today.  That does need to be returned tomorrow.

Electoral College -- there is talk that we may have one candidate earn the most votes of the population while the other candidate earns the most electoral college votes.  Therefore this week we are reading and learning about the electoral college.
Here is the magical formula:

Electoral College = # of Senators + # of House of Representatives + 3 electors from the District of Columbia
Total electoral college votes = 100 (50 states * 2 senators per state) + (435 House of Representatives)+ 3 electors from the District of Columbia  Therefore a total of 538 votes.
Therefore it takes 270 to win a majority.

Operation:  Less homework on Halloween night
Students had 35 minutes to work on homework prior to lunch.

Get ready to plan for the week and also begin working on homework.  We got down to business and students had 45 minutes.

DAY 39

It was a rainy Monday in October...so can we trust that Fall is finally here?  Or are we getting 80+ degree weather again next week?

Today was an open ended day that allowed students to work with myself and with each other completing, starting?, or finish reading their book on our first Book Project of the year.   Need directions again? Click here.

Students started the day off playing a great game of dodgeball in the multipurpose room since it was throwing down rain at the time.

Upon returning to class the students had one hour to work on their Book Project.

We then took our spelling pretest after morning recess.  Here are this week’s words.

Then students were able to work on their book project for one more hour.

Students that were done or who had not brought enough materials to work today in class were able to begin this week’s homework, focus on factoring & orders of operations on www.ixl.com and write down the game plan for the week.

We then covered today’s math lesson.  It focused on Order of Operations.
Here are our notes (some notes lost due to smartboard crashing issues)
Here is a quick Brainpop

Day 37

CNN Students
We made up for two days of CNN’s so many topics were discussed and written about.  Topics you can quiz your son/daughter about are:  presidential debate (jobs and equality for women), The Rubik`s Cube big comeback, the young girl from Pakistan that spoke out for girl’s rights & education and what the Taliban did to her, girls not allowed to go to school in some of the world, and finally a bike made 100% out of recycled materials such as cardboard and tires.  The kids really liked the final piece on the new lighter, cheaper and environmentally friendly bike.

We then had time to work on mean, mode, median, & range, complete homework, read for enjoyment, work on a math challenge, or complete tests/assessments.

Library visit -- followed by our earthquake drill.

The class giggled for a little bit however they were pretty amazing.

Math:
More practice writing out expressions and solving expressions.
Here are our notes.

Science rotation page 174-177 + vocab cards due on Tuesday

Math Art

They returned and we had a great discussion on what makes something honest or not honest.  We also talked about if it is ok to not always be honest?  What is stealing and what isn’t?   It was some great honest conversations!!

We are week away from our first of three book projects.  I promised the students that I would give them “at least” two hours on Monday to work on their book project.  Therefore they have weekend homework.  They need to remember to bring their book into class on Monday, bring any materials they need for completing the project and have given some thought to how they want to complete the sections.

Students that have completed their project may use this time to either begin their next book project, use that time to study or create an independent project, have what they have completed be peer edited or read for enjoyment.
Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Tuesday, #35 2012 2013 (10/16/12)

Day 35 of our journey together!

It was a day of technology, celebrating and a large dancing chicken.

We began the day with a celebration and recognizing all the hard work the students did fund raising and jogging for our Jaws’a’thon.

Ms. McGovern held up her part of the bargain and on “boss’s day”  she dressed as a large chicken and danced for the entire school!!

After that performance we were tasked with the challenging of returning to the computer lab and beginning our technology Tuesday fun & learning.  Read about all activities right here.

In theory your son/daughter should be able to explain some information about tonight’s presidential debate and also explain to you some details about the Cuban Missile crisis.

We started a quick lesson on “pre” algebra.  We covered what a variable and an expression is.
Here are our quick notes and my advice to copy the examples into their math notebook.
If your son/daughter want further explanation or if they want to earn Khan Academy points/badges.  They can watch this. (just make sure they log into Khan prior to watching).

We ended the day with science rotation and math/art rotation.

Students that paid for photos received their photos back today.  They came yesterday however I forgot to hand them back.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard
