Day 12

Day 12
Thursday, September 8, 2011

Expect a big packet of paper and fliers today.  I tried to use Thursday as our big handout day.   They also brought home our first fund raiser for the year.  So have them clean out their backpack when they get home.

We started the day off with technology in the computer lab.  Typing practice, STAR test, and working with www.pearsonsuccessnet.com

Computer lab was cut short because of the assembly.  The assembly was a combination of both prizes they can earn for selling tons of goodies and a safety presentation by our Dublin police.

Math today...
subtracting with decimals
we are really pushing for students to attempt to use the “best practice” format modeled by Alameda County’s math gurus which is based upon the Singapore math style.
It involves threekey principles:
1.  Using the commutative and distributive properties of addition -- numbers are broken into pieces that allow the student manipulate them into parts that make it arithmetic easy for them.
2.  Work is strictly line by line and vertical.   Work may be several/many lines downward, but the focus is to computate downward rather than going horizontally.  This is important as this is how alegebra and above computation HAVE to be completed.
Here are our notes.

After the math lesson, we discussed how they can be use these three amazing resources:
1.  www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
2.  http://www.khanacademy.org
If your son/daughter would like to qualify for extra credit, they can request to make me their “coach” and it will log which education movies they are watching and how well they do on quizes and practice work.  This will be treated as extra credit and greatly help their math grades.
They will need to work with you to register with the site (100% totally free) and then type in my gmail address as their coach.
3.  www.brainpop.com   --- They were given the user name and password.  If they lost it, I can email it to you.

They then had their Universal Access hour with Mrs. Cargo where they are working on math concepts.
