Thursday, #164 2011 2012

Thursday, May 17th
Day 164 of week 35

Technology Thursday -- every single student met with me and we discussed their Lewis and Clark projects.  The students then had 75 minutes to begin researching and working on their projects.  It was great to have a small room super quite as 28 students were plugging away researching and learning about topics that they choose and is not a multiple choice test.

We then came back and worked on their Lewis and Clark poems and begin researching the CNN-Students project.

Wells Middle School math assessment -- Wells created a 5th grade assessment to have an idea to where to strategically place students next year while also seeing who qualifies to try and test out of 6th grade math.

We then watched the Lewis and Clark documentary.  Today’s portion had the Corp of Discovery “make” it to the Pacific Ocean.  They have now decided to winter slightly in-land off the coast before triumphantly heading home.

At the end of the day we were blessed with a visit from one of the librarians from our Dublin Library.  She explained all of the various reading competitions, the Mayor’s Challenge and other shows & activities that the library will be putting on this summer.
Click here to see what is happening at our local library.

Summer School possibilities --  They will be offering a 5th grade going into 6th grade summer school this summer.  It will be taking place at Fallon School.    If you do not have much planned or the resources to have your child participating in mind enriching activities during the summer please strongly consider having your son or daughter attend summer school.   Sitting around watching television or playing video games will only increase or create a learning gap.   I have the summer school applications and I have a limited amount of “jump to the head of the line” applications for those serious about summer school.
Not sure about pulling the trigger on summer school and you don’t have a “plan” for summer, please read through the links below:
In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers he outlines that students that have a summer spent doing enrichment based activities (summer school, museums, science camps, etc..) actually may experience “more” learning than during the school year.   I would recommend getting the book or reading these links since I am giving you a super short review of what the findings show.
Write up #1 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #2 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #3 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.
Write up #4 explaining how doing activities or schooling during the summer directly pay off.

Wells Field walking field trip is tomorrow:
Students #11, #12, #13, 19, #24 and #27 all need to return their field trip form first thing tomorrow morning.
We begin walking at 8:30’ish.  We return to DES around noon’ish.
It will be cool, yet refreshing in the morning, and the walk back it may be in the 70’s.  Therefore have your son/daughter wear comfortable shoes, eat a healthy breakfast since we are walking 2+ miles tomorrow and layers of clothes.
We will be eating lunch at DES therefore they do not have to pack a special lunch.
Wells Middle School will be offering their snack bar services to our kids.  However kids do need to bring cash in order to purchase from the snack bar.   They do NOT have to buy from the snack bar so it is only if you would like to hook them up or not.

Kind regards,
