We had our first Theme 1 test.  We talked about the need to read the passages three times.  Once to read like all good readers do, where they envision what the characters look like, ask questions, link what they are reading to their own prior knowledge and day dream about what they are reading.  The second read should be read like a C.S.I. scientist where they underline, mark key passages and look for context clues.   Finally they should read the questions being asked and with their prior two reads they should find the answers within passage.
I also hope the students committed to studying the syllabication words, review their grammar packets and used the study guide to its fullest capacity.
*this takes about 75 minutes to complete.

After that returned for a little bit of project time and some people worked further on their theme test.

At 11 we went to our kindergarten buddies class and met them for the first time this year.  It is always adorable seeing the big fifth graders interact and care for their little buddies.  We overheard some excited 5 year olds say, “can I have your phone number?,”  “do you want to have a play date?,” and “do you want to come to my birthday party?”   So they did a buddy interview, took photos together and then the big kids read to the little guys.  Ask your son/daughter about their buddy and what they did today.

We returned and discussed validation (both for parking and for human kindness).  We also discussed “playing it forward” and just being kind to others and the positive effects that this has on individuals and our community.
We then watched a short movie titled, “Validation”

After that the students had Mrs. Cargo and Mrs. Wilmott’s class.

FYI -- I FAILED to handout the Thursday Shark Bite (blue form), I will send it home.  I apologize about that.  Apparently we had an eventful lunch today with flying noodles (food fight) and f’bombs being dropped so I was pretty busy after the lunch recess.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard
