Thursday, #32 2012 2013 (10/11/12)

Thursday, October 11, 2012

With the A’s playing tonight and some kids interested in the Vice President’s debate I tried to give the students ample opportunity to lesson their homework responsibilities for tonight.

Through a series of rotations every student was extended the opportunity to work 40 minutes on the computer and then 40 minutes to work silently at their desks on homework.  Therefore students were able to complete free-writes, complete math homework, all other types of homework, practice division on IXL.com, brainpops and their European Explorer reports.

We had the library today and the kids did a great job actively participating in the circle read and staying quiet as the library is also being used for intervention real-estate.

We had a celebration regarding our school’s 50 point growth with the state’s API scores.    The kids were a big reason for the jump since their class accounted for ¼ of the scores.  So we took time out to pat ourselves on the back.

Math-- We reviewed a few of the Singapore methods for last night’s division problems.
Test is tomorrow.

CNN Students:
Day of the Girl is today.  We discussed a story of a young girl that spoke out against gender bias and the need for all her people to be educated and how Taliban bullies brought her physical harm.
We also discussed tonight’s Vice President debate with Biden versus Ryan.

We rotated today with the students continuing to learn about space.

Then the rotated to Mrs. Cho’s class and continued practicing with math/art.

At some point in the day we were able to focus on our priorities and we caught this live as it happened.

Social Studies -- this week Mrs. Cooper and the students have been learning all about the checks & balances and the three branches of our Federal government.

Once again the students were literally given 80 minutes to work on homework, practice skills or research for projects therefore homework should be somewhat mellow.

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard

Tuesday, #30 2012 2013 (10/09/12)

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

It was a unique and crazy day.   I am out all day today and all day on Wednesday due to district mandated training.  However the class is in wonderful hands with Mrs. Cooper.

Students had their usual Technology Tuesday.  Click here to see what it was all about.

We then had a 60+ minutes assembly on the beauty and mystery of science.

We then rotated the remainder of the day.   Therefore the students had Mrs. Cargo’s science and Mrs. Cho’s math & art rotation today.

**Due to the length of the assembly we did NOT review last night’s math homework.  Therefore the students do NOT have any math homework tonight.  I will also update the homework below to reflect that math change.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Monday, #29 2012 2013 (10/08/12)

Today was all about "large" division!
Monday, October 8, 2012

It was a fun filled Monday....

We started the day by finishing our thank you letters to the Lawrence Livermore Lab.  Students that completed that were allowed to read silently.

After that we completed our spelling pretest for the week.

We then did an extra long session of Lewis and Clark.
Today’s big events were:

  • The Continental Divide
  • Seeing the origin of the Missouri River
  • Trying desperately to find the Shoshone Indians
  • Sacagawea and Chief Cameahwait
We discussed what the “Great Coincident” was all about.  We will now catch up to this lucky even in our Seaman book.

Math:
Today’s big lesson, via Miss Sandy, why estimating well is actually taking a shortcut.
With many of the students “falling for” the guess & check or the stacking method, the strategies biggest challenge is when students guess in small increments (e.g. using only 10, 100, 1000 instead of 40, 70, 900 etc..) since these can take a long vertical path on the homework.

However we rationalized that if you estimated and generally rounded down  before working on the problem you can use your estimation as a starting point for your guess & check or stacking method.

We did two examples of this today.  Click here to see our two examples.

We completed our day with taking the time to write up our homework into our day planners and to begin working on that homework.

Finally I did print up a high level progress report for everyone using www.engrade.com   This allowed students to see how they were doing with their classwork and their homework so far.   At this point about 60% of the class has logged in, set up their account and looked at the account at least once.

Class Dojo -- I also sent a report that captured all of the month of September.  It now allows for the system to have more than one email so if you would like to be added please shoot me an email.

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard

Thursday, #27 2012 2013 (10/04/12)

Corps of Discovery had many run ins with these "cuddly" creatures.
Day 27

Tomorrow PFC would highly appreciate the turning in of the Jaw’A Thon money.  Remember a $20 per student average will bring chickens and Gangnam Style to DES.

We began the day with some minor assessment times, complete tests, silent reading time, and working on projects.

Then we continued heading West with our Corp of Discovery.  They leave the Mandans, find a literal fork in the road, and come face to face with some of the most majestic waterfalls that you will ever see.   Most exciting was reading the journal entries of the Corps as they came face to face with the North American Grizzly Bear.   They had little no predator ahead of them on the food chain and they were humongous and fierce.

In our Seaman book the Corp is also heading further West after leaving the Mandans.   The book spends time discussing how the entire Corp must work together to keep Seaman alive after she is bit by a beaver.

Library visit -- students used that time to either check out books or complete homework.

Math:
Dividing numbers with larger quotients and divisors.
We discussed how the “cupcake” or the “circle method” would not be advisable because few of us have the time to write out 79 circles.
The guess & check and the stack’em method would be the best options.
Also when possible the prime factorization method will help you simplify the fraction (aka the division problem).
95% of the kids claim to really understand some of the newer methods.   I think if they have a choice they may actually use the guess & check or the stack’em method over the traditional style.
Here are our day of many examples.

CNN Students
We took notes and wrote about the last two days worth of news.
Wednesday’s focused a big chunk of time on historical debate mistakes.
Nixon/JFK, Ford vs Carter, “There he goes again,” “I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience,”  Bush Sr. checking his watch, and Al Gore sighing numerous times.

Today’s did  a great job of comparing and contrasting some of the basic economic philosophies and their view of government’s role.  They then had a great piece on how the Hispanic vote is a growing force in American politics and how both parties are making efforts to increase Hispanic voter turnout and to influence their political allegiances.

We reviewed this week’s grammar lesson on plural nouns.

We also reviewed the comprehension skill of “summarizing.”

We ended the day with more work on the three branches of government.  Ask them to explain “checks and balances” and what the roles of the legislative, judicial and executive branches are.

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard

Wednesday, #26 2012 2013 (10/03/12)

Your 2012 Western Division Champs!
Day 26

Sorry about yesterday.  Dev had a slight fever and congestion.   On the days that Tam works then I get sick patrol.  However we are blessed to have the extremely talented Mrs. Cooper to run the ship.  It similar to when Captain Kirk handed it off to the extremely qualified Mr. Spock.

Tonight’s debate -- students are encouraged to watch the debate, watch it edited on Youtube afterwards, or try to find a “somewhat” unbiased recap of it.   They can either do a short write up, a podcast, a quick video, or a powerpoint of what they took from the debate.  Looking for specifics from the debate and not generic “they were great, they were boring.etc..”

Field trip to Lawrence Livermore Lab --- thanks to all of the parent chaperones.  We got there on time and it was drama free with no one getting lost.
Please ask your son/daughter what they learned and what stood out about today’s field trip.  Ask them to explain the marshmellow, the loud explosion,  elephant tooth-paste, four students were able to “light up my life” by holding hands, and biking.

Math:
Mo’ division, Mo’division and even mo’division!!!
We practiced more with the decomposition and using prime factoring.
Here are the notes from today and I even did an example of division showing all of the various division strategies EXCEPT for traditional.

Day 24

It was a hot Monday in Dublin...heck, it still is a hot day in Dublin.   100+?

P.E.  first thing in the morning before all the heat hit.

Spelling Pretest
Volcanoes are this week’s words

Seaman -- winter with the Mandans.  It was cold, it was low on food and they had a ton of time sitting in a small room, dancing and talking.

Lewis and Clark -- Also learned about the winter with the Mandans.   It dropped to the temperature of -35 degrees.  Toes were frostbitten & lost and Sacagawea somehow successfully delivered her little boy, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau.

Math:
More practice with division.....
Here are our notes from today.
Students need to follow this format all week:
1. Write the original problem down
2.  Do a “quick” estimate
3.  Solve the problem using one of the non traditional methods.

Cnn Students / Notes and Inference Skills
Topics that we discussed and wrote about today:
Syria -- what is a “civil war?”  ;  Supreme Court -- how long do you serve?  why an odd # of justices? ; How does the hot weather and corn not growing well affect the price of meat?;   What is the “new” way to farm fish?  ;  The new government regulations regarding food and calories, ensuring students eat healthy versus the government staying out of my diet;  Finally, who is Whitney Kropp and how did she overcome bullying?

Plan, prioritize and get a head start on the week ahead.
Students were given 30 minutes to write everything down in their day planner and begin working on homework.
Many students chose to use the time wisely while a handful of students did not stay focused during those precious 30 minutes.

Field Trip is on Wednesday.
It runs from 8:30-Noon’ish;   We are back before lunch.   However student do miss out on their snack time and it is not practical to eat at the laboratory during exhibits and presentations.   I suggest the students have a slightly larger than normal breakfast.
