Monday
Day 121 of week 29
A new student joined our class. We now officially have 29 amazing awesome students!!
Also all of the technology stuff will be delivered on Thursday the 21st. Today they installed the Apple T.V. device that will allow me to “smartboard” from wherever in the room. I love the idea of sitting next to some of the more spirited students and leading our math discussions from there.
P.E. (push-ups?)
Johnny Tremain -- Johnny moves on with his life and finds a job and a place to stay. He will be bunking up with his friend, Rab, and he will be delivering newspapers. He also had another run-in with mean Mr. Lyte.
Book projects -- our first Hobbit day. Both students delivered solid performances and created work that at times displayed that they clearly had read the book and were developing that important skill of analyzing and/or having an opinion based upon facts/observations read in their book.
One boy created a poem that captured all of the main character’s from the book and it rhymed. It is always cool when a project brings “ooohs” and “woooooow” from the students.
As a reminder every student receives feedback at the time we conclude their presentation and then I send the student a personalized email with specific feedback and suggestions for revision.
Math:
Integer chapter -- negative/positive and the distance away from zero.
We also discussed our most used integer phrases in real life: withdrawal, deposit, check, ATM, temperature, etc..
Three lessons tonight for homework however they do not require actual arithmetic, rather the students need to think through the positive and negative integer and what their value is. Tonight is one where there will be very little “work shown”
More preposition work.
Spelling pretest for the week. Click here for the words.
Next Wednesday night (3/27/13): Camp Arroyo will be here to show you their awesome presentation and answer your questions.
**If you know for sure that your son/daughter will not be attending camp (May 14th-17th), please let us know ASAP. We will then make arrangements to ensure that your son/daughter experiences a week of enrichment while at DES.
***Know that the school would love and desires your son/daughter attend camp. It really is a great learning experience both scholastically and socially. Therefore if you need to work out some sort of tuition plan the school is committed to work with you. Please contact Ms. McGovern as your earliest convenience to discuss specifics.
The 1st week after Spring Break all the camp paperwork will be sent home. Those that require medicines to be brought in should be aware that the camp and the district require doctor signatures and prior authorization.
What is the deal with the end of the year? What brought about the recent changes? What was the strategy behind things? If you can, please come to the April 22nd year-end planning meeting at 2:10 in room C-7. The entire 5th grade team will be there to explain the dates, answer your questions and then assist with finding parent “project-leads” for some of the year-end activities.
Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard
