This was from last week's Star Student. His humor cracked me up and his artistry is impressive. |
Today -- we began with more reading in Johnny Tremain. We are learning more about the family and each individual person. The reader was?? Mrs. G. I am a dork for not formally mentioning that we have Mrs. G. for a six-week apprenticeship. She comes to our class after recently completing a rotation with first grader at Dougherty Elementary. We are lucky to have her experience and additional teaching skills for the next month plus.
After reading, we moved onto learning about the three states of matter. Solid, liquid and gas were all discussed today.
We corrected last night’s math homework and did a few practice problems prior to recess. After recess the students took the chapter 7 test. From the early results students that were struggling had done the arithmetic correct however they were making decimal placement mistakes. Engrade should be updated by tomorrow with the most recent test scores.
Students that completed their test were encouraged to study for tomorrow’s math/art test, complete the math/art project, read for science and/or make their science vocabulary cards.
After lunch we did some group competition and reading comprehension work. Students were broken into teams of five. They took our reading comprehension practice from Monday and Tuesday night and then had to turn in the ultimate answer sheet. The winning team will be announced tomorrow.
Self-directed learners project - as we get ready for the May testing we are working on strategically making goals and working towards these goals. The big learning process has been moving from a “wish” or a “dream” and working towards brainstorming steps to make the dream a reality.
The students read these two articles on Monday and Tuesday:
article 1 on daydreaming
article 2 on "future self"
Reminder -- MATH NIGHT is tonight. 6 to 9.
We have activities planned for the kids. We have classes & will take questions from the moms and dads in the adult section. I unfortunately have a basketball playoff game at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday night therefore I will only be there until 6:40’ish.
*Fyi students earn a homework pass if they show up on Wednesday night.
Cool things to ask your students:
1. What have they gotten out of the “Dream without a plan is just a wish” project so far? What do they believe they need to work on?
2. How is their book project coming along? Does it reflect the fact they had 3 months to work on it?
3. How did today’s team competition go with the reading comprehension?
Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Friday is Read-In-Day and the day ends at 12:31 p.m.
Friday is a ½ day and the entire school is celebrating the love of reading. Therefore students can wear comfortable clothing, school appropriate PJs, bring pillows/blankets, and definitely bring books to read. They must have shoes that allow for walking and being outside during recess. They may also bring microwaved popcorn or non-sugar based snacks.
