Tuesday #100 2012-2013

The bright Spring like birthday cookies the students enjoyed today.
Day 100 of week 24

With a second day of Spring like weather the kids were re-calibrated and back to their usual excellent behavior.

Today in technology lab the students successfully took their monthly reading assessment, worked on learning about ecosystems, worked on prefixes and suffixes, typed for 15 minutes, gave me their proposed Famous American person and finally did some grammar work on Scootpad.

Chapter 6 test -- student were able to start however they were unable to complete the exam.  We will continue again tomorrow.

Math lesson:
Chapter 7 is all about dividing decimals
Today’s lesson is dividing numbers by 10, 100, 1000,etc
Notes are here.
Here is a 3 minute lesson if your son/daughter would like to see more examples.

Science with Mrs. Cargo -- matter, atoms, elements

Math/ARt with Mrs. Cho -- geometry

Reminder students should be working on their book projects.  They are due on the 28th of February however the six sections take some time to do a 5th grade level of work (i.e. without coffee or something, it would be challenging to complete in 2 evenings).

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard

Reminder -- the book project is due on February 28th!!
I have personally met with students in small groups and some people I gave high-fives since they were about done.  Others were causing me anxiety because they had not yet finished their book.
These projects are meant to be extensively worked on.  That is why I assigned 1 per trimester.
Here are the book project instructions

Response to literature --
We looked at the recipe style of creating a response to literature paragraph.
Students will be completing a paragraph a night for homework this week.

Yes, we still do Valentine’s cards in 5th grade!!
Rules:
1.  Socialism / communism rules -- bring one card for everyone or don’t bring any cards (all or nothing).
2.  You may either
a.  Label each card individually with the person’s name
b.  Have your son/daughter sign the card and just bring the 27 cards.  They will randomly distribute the cards.
3.  No extra “special”  cards, flowers or gifts given to a special student.  People trying to make a “love” connection with a fellow peer need to do that after school.
True story, I had a young lad try to court a 5th grade girl who did not feel the same way.  He did this early in the school day and it was embarrassing for him since he was now stuck with the person & his friends for the remainder of the school day.
4.  Please no extra candy for myself -- I am still going strong on my diet (now 62+ pounds lost since 1/1/2011!) and among other things I give up candy/sweets every Lenten season.
