Wednesday #109 2012-2013

This was from last week's Star Student.  His humor cracked me up and his artistry is impressive.
Day 109 of week 26

Today -- we began with more reading in Johnny Tremain.  We are learning more about the family and each individual person.    The reader was?? Mrs. G.    I am a dork for not formally mentioning that we have Mrs. G. for a six-week apprenticeship.  She comes to our class after recently completing a rotation with first grader at Dougherty Elementary.   We are lucky to have her experience and additional teaching skills for the next month plus.

After reading, we moved onto learning about the three states of matter.  Solid, liquid and gas were all discussed today.

We corrected last night’s math homework and did a few practice problems prior to recess.  After recess the students took the chapter 7 test.   From the early results students that were struggling had done the arithmetic correct however they were making decimal placement mistakes.  Engrade should be updated by tomorrow with the most recent test scores.

Students that completed their test were encouraged to study for tomorrow’s math/art test, complete the math/art project, read for science and/or make their science vocabulary cards.

After lunch we did some group competition and reading comprehension work.  Students were broken into teams of five.  They took our reading comprehension practice from Monday and Tuesday night and then had to turn in the ultimate answer sheet.  The winning team will be announced tomorrow.

Self-directed learners project - as we get ready for the May testing we are working on strategically making goals and working towards these goals.  The big learning process has been moving from a “wish” or a “dream” and working towards brainstorming steps to make the dream a reality.
The students read these two articles on Monday and Tuesday:
article 1 on daydreaming
article 2 on "future self"

Reminder -- MATH NIGHT is tonight.  6 to 9.
We have activities planned for the kids.  We have classes & will take questions from the moms and dads in the adult section.  I unfortunately have a basketball playoff game at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday night therefore I will only be there until 6:40’ish.
*Fyi students earn a homework pass if they show up on Wednesday night.

Cool things to ask your students:
1.  What have they gotten out of the “Dream without a plan is just a wish” project so far? What do they believe they need to work on?
2.  How is their book project coming along?  Does it reflect the fact they had 3 months to work on it?
3.   How did today’s team competition go with the reading comprehension?

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Monday #107 2012-2013

Day 107 of week 26!!!

What a beautiful Monday, not too cold, not too hot and a ton of glorious sun shining upon us.

Today the students began the day with PE.  They are doing their annual fitness assessments.  Today involved a ton of running and many of the kids returned to class bright red, thirsty and some were coughing.  Don’t be surprised if they fall to sleep early tonight.

We continued our Johnny Tremain reading.  Today we began learning a little bit more about Dove, Dusty, Johnny, and the Lapham family.   We focused today regarding how reading can be greatly improved when we have fun asking questions or hypothesize what will happen next.

We are at the end of theme therefore we will be taking the Theme test on Friday, February 8th.    The end of the theme spelling test will be on Tuesday, March 5th.
Here are the words they need to study.

Click here to get a head start on theme 3 studying.

Math
Today was more examples of everyday math challenges.  Students are asked to solve budgetary, purchasing and selling type math questions.
We did several examples as a class and achieved: 83%, 100% and 86% on the three questions!!

Reviewing our most recent science assessment review.  So far we are reviewing atoms and matter and the class is doing an amazing job.

Working on our self-directed goals related to our May testing.
We read the following article:
http://thetalentcode.com/2013/02/05/how-to-daydream-more-effectively/
We discussed what it means to make concrete steps and goals when you make a dream.

Tonight the students are to read a follow up article:
http://thetalentcode.com/2013/02/22/make-your-future-self-happy-guest-post-by-my-daughter-katie-14/

We then planned out the remainder of the week since we have many exciting things due this week.

The book project is due on Thursday.

Wednesday night is Math Night.  It runs from 6 to 8 p.m.   We have activities planned for the kids.  We have classes & will take questions from the moms and dads in the adult section.  I unfortunately have a basketball playoff game at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday night therefore I will only be there until 6:40’ish.

Cool things to ask your students:
1.  They had a drug awareness presentation by our Dublin police on Friday, what did they take from the presentation?  What was it primarily about?
2.  How is their book project coming along?  Does it reflect the fact they had 3 months to work on it?
3.   You could ask them about tonight’s math homework and how you used this type of mathematics on a daily/frequent basis.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Thursday #105 2012-2013

Day 105 of week 25!!

What went down today?

More assessment time for those that have not quite finished our 3rd trimester ones.  Students that have completed their assessments were working on Scootpad, Ixl, analyzing their engrade work, working on their math/art projects  and Famous American research.

We began our initial Johnny Tremain reading!!!
You can have  a quick overview of this book by checking this out.

Then before recess Ms. Sandy distributed her homemade and yummy “mock apple pie.”   During one of our Lewis and Clark presentations, one of the students shared about various “old school” reciepes and they spoke about the apple pie that does NOT have apples in it.

“A mock apple pie, made from crackers, was possibly invented by pioneers on the move during the nineteenth century who were bereft of apples. In the 1930s, and for many years afterwards, Ritz Crackers promoted a recipe for mock apple pie using its product, along with sugar and various spices’       Found here.

Then the students had science with Mrs. Cargo learning about matter and metals.

Then the students had science with Mr. Hubbard where we discussed the basic model regarding atoms.  We even did some nice drawings of five different atoms.

After lunch the students had math/art.

When we returned we did a few real life examples of division with decimals.  Primarily they were examples with purchasing something and dividing it by the number of items that we purchased.  Here are the notes we have taken so far.

Cool things to ask your students:
1.  What is Johnny Tremain about?  What type of project do they think they will be doing?
2.  Describe what protons, neutrons, and electrons are...which one is positive, negative and neutral
3.  If they occur naturally at home, have them figure out the cost of things per item (use those division skills).

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Tuesday #103 2012-2013

Day 103 of week 25

Tomorrow is a special PE day.  With the run of Monday holidays they are making up one tomorrow morning.

Today -- Technology Tuesday
We focused on putting together a state testing game plan and reflection on our work effort so far this school year.   Students spent time reflecting and reading through their monthly reading assessment results, logging into Engrade and reflecting on what that said and they wrote about how much they have read in Reading Around the World.

We did also find time to practice typing for 15 minutes and watch two Brainpops (1. on Rock Cycles and 2. on antonyms, synonyms and homonyms).

Math:
More practice and discussions with dividing with decimals.
Here are the notes we have taken so far.

Plan out for the week.

Science -- matter / atoms/ nucleus
Math/Art -- math project

Other things of note:
Less homework this week so students can focus on their book project, math/art project and response to literature.

The bright Spring like birthday cookies the students enjoyed today.
Day 100 of week 24

With a second day of Spring like weather the kids were re-calibrated and back to their usual excellent behavior.

Today in technology lab the students successfully took their monthly reading assessment, worked on learning about ecosystems, worked on prefixes and suffixes, typed for 15 minutes, gave me their proposed Famous American person and finally did some grammar work on Scootpad.

Chapter 6 test -- student were able to start however they were unable to complete the exam.  We will continue again tomorrow.

Math lesson:
Chapter 7 is all about dividing decimals
Today’s lesson is dividing numbers by 10, 100, 1000,etc
Notes are here.
Here is a 3 minute lesson if your son/daughter would like to see more examples.

Science with Mrs. Cargo -- matter, atoms, elements

Math/ARt with Mrs. Cho -- geometry

Reminder students should be working on their book projects.  They are due on the 28th of February however the six sections take some time to do a 5th grade level of work (i.e. without coffee or something, it would be challenging to complete in 2 evenings).

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard

Yes, we still do Valentine’s cards in 5th grade!!
Rules:
1.  Socialism / communism rules -- bring one card for everyone or don’t bring any cards (all or nothing).
2.  You may either
a.  Label each card individually with the person’s name
b.  Have your son/daughter sign the card and just bring the 27 cards.  They will randomly distribute the cards.
3.  No extra “special”  cards, flowers or gifts given to a special student.  People trying to make a “love” connection with a fellow peer need to do that after school.
True story, I had a young lad try to court a 5th grade girl who did not feel the same way.  He did this early in the school day and it was embarrassing for him since he was now stuck with the person & his friends for the remainder of the school day.
4.  Please no extra candy for myself -- I am still going strong on my diet (now 62+ pounds lost since 1/1/2011!) and among other things I give up candy/sweets every Lenten season.

25% = ¼ = .25

We planned for the remainder of the week.
We also viewed Famous American Hall of Fame so kids can see the effort that goes into a Famous American report.

Sorry for the lack of communication last week.  It was a crazy week with after school commitments that had me at the District Office.

The district hopes to move fast on deciding the future technology purchases for elementary, middle and high school.  Therefore our class will be test piloting Google Chrome notebooks.  There will be more details to follow.  We will be the only 5th grade class test piloting these in the district so this will be a big test.

Monday #94 2012-2013

49ers were unable to add another one of these on Sunday.
Day 94 of Week 23

We began the day with P.E. on its real day, Monday.

The morning time was spent on organizing prior assessments and upcoming assessments.  We will be doing 30 to 45 minutes of assessment over the next week to prepare for our February collaboration meetings.  We analyze the areas of strengths and areas of refocus as we approach the May testing season.   On in individual level this allows us to work with students so they can read/assess these same areas and know which areas they have learned and which areas to focus on.

Math:
Decimals and fractions --
We discussed the history of the two types of expressing values.   How they are related and how you can use them interchangeably to meet your arithmetic needs.

Today we practiced both:
1.  traditional style of multiplication (w/ 80’s terminology of “bunny hops”)
2. generic area model with decimal multiplication

Common Core Math -- will demand that students know both methods therefore they need to practice and be exposed to be methods.

Our school’s computer servers went down towards the end of the day therefore I have no way to share today’s notes with you.   They were saved on a network file that I have no access to at this time.

Click here to see the lesson used in class with their examples.

Tiger Mom reading
We continued reading the story.  The author shared out how she recalled her father calling her “garbage” however she understood this wasn’t personally and it was to call her out on her disrespectful attitude.  She then shared how she called her Americanized daughter the same thing and her peers of non-Tiger Moms ostracized her.
