Wednesday, March 26, 2014, Week 32 and Day 135

Amazing conversations going on over the last few days.   We have been engaged in some deep thought provoking conversations regarding what we are reading and what is happening.    Your kids are at this amazing age where they are really starting to synthesize information and they beginning to have a foundational knowledge that allows them to participate and expand upon ideas/theories.

The hard part?  What can you say that will bring about these ideas since I’m assuming 98% of you get, “nothing” or “same old, same old” when you ask what went down today.

Yesterday we had a further discussion on the NSA , Homeland Security, and how our once large world can now seem pretty small.  We discussed how  1,100 miles between Dublin and Montana would seem like a year’s journey during the Corp of Discovery time while today with technology that can seem like they are just next door.  We talked about how basically anything that you say over communication devices, write/post or take pictures can not easily go away or hit delete.   We also discussed how some jokes or mistakes can cross a line and not be considered appropriate or worse considered a threat.
Once again -- if you want to up your parental game when it comes to on-line stuff with regards to parenting in 2014 because it is waaaay different than our moms and dads had to put up with -- use this resource.

We also read the Domino Effect of Greed article yesterday.  The study is pretty compelling and powerful information.  It explains that our truest nature or comfort level is to share resources equally (e.g. $3 for you and $3 for me).  However when we feel that someone has not shared fairly/equitably we remember the diss and we reciprocate the unfairness to the next person.  We negatively “pay it forward.”   To make matters more challenging, when we receive above and beyond gifts/compensation (e.g. person gives me $6 and keeps $0 for herself) we tend to still revert to sharing fairly/equitably with the next person.     So humans may be more inclined to stick it to people especially when they have been wronged recently.  So we discussed this and how people who believe they belong to a larger group/community or can find “their happy place” will respond.  You can read the article here.    Students discussed and are writing about this issue on our class website.  Ask to have them share their thoughts with you.

We also once again discussed our friend from the Dan Plan.    Earlier this year we read about this man’s journey to try out the 10,000 hour rule to master a skill.  He was a terrible golfer who decided to dedicate his life, or at least the next 10,000 hours of practice time, towards becoming an elite golfer.  So we listened to a BBC Podcast  while also practicing taking Cornell Notes that had an update on how Dan is progressing after 4 years and 4,000 hours.  The content of the podcast lead to a long discussion on how determined and mindful practicing for 10,000 hours can lead to mastery however some of the people studying matter agree that you have to “like” or “enjoy” what you spending so much time doing.   The argument being if you have a talent in an area then the 10,000 hours don’t seem so arduous since you are mastering something you find rather satisfying or enjoyable.  So we talked about how a goal of theirs should be to keep their minds and hearts open trying to discover what interests them or what they seem passionate about.  We also had a discussion on mastering something that will lead to a life of creating happiness and giving back versus being passionate towards a “hobby.”  If you have time, ask them about Dan the golfer, 10,000 hours, what they are passionate & willing to spend 10,000 hours on and hobby vs job.

Math:  We are once again reviewing and revisiting fractions in all their glory.  Students that are completing this work quickly should be using that time to review independently with www.ixl.com, scootpad.com, or khanacademy.
With math the kids are also now posting and sharing their chapter study guides while learning how to use Google Sites.  Students are posting, designing and chapter specific websites to share the math review.  It is a pretty exciting stuff.

We also had discussion about alloy metals, malleable metals, government regulations, 24 carat gold, what metal characteristics have made platinum  the wedding ring’s metal of choice, cheap steel, earthquake protection and Dublin High School.  It was fun.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Monday, March 24, 2014, Week 32 and Day 133

Happy Monday!!

It was a beautiful March day that reached into the 80’s today.  Unbelievable how blessed we are to have such amazing weather.

Today we focused on completing our unit on Lewis & Clark and the Corp of Discovery.  Today we learned about how York did not receive his freedom nor did he earn a bonus upon returning from the expedition.   Clark would remain friendly with the Native Americans and his empathy with their people may have cost him an election or two.  We also began fleshing out why the Native American historian described the Corp of Discovery and their initial meeting with the Native Americans, “the beginning of the end for the American tribes.”  Finally we covered the sad challenging final days that Lewis dealt with prior to his eventual death.
Students are to reflect more about the Native Americans and how their lifestyle, way of life and their ability to use the land were changed in the years following the visit of the Corp of Discovery.

We did rotate today and they do have science that is due on Tuesday.

During math time the students completed a fraction assessment that challenged their abilities to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.  It also had questions on order of operation.  Students we given some of their scores back.  they were encouraged to review their notes, www.ixl.com and khanacademy when reviewing this week.

Really exciting is that the class is broken into 6 unique groups and each group is creating a “study guide” for every chapter that we are working towards mastery.  Students were given 60 minutes on Thursday and Friday during class.   They were given about 30 minutes today.  Their final study guide is due tomorrow.

After lunch we discussed what happened with a local Dublin H.S. student.   We had an honest discussion about how what you say on-line will stay with you.  Or in this case the local boy’s attempt to be anonymous while playing a prank was not taken as a joke and he was unable to remain anonymous in a world or country that monitors that type of joking/threat.    Furthermore from reading the police record every phone call was recorded.  Therefore we discussed the need to remember never to say or do anything that you don’t want living around for ever.    If you are looking for a great wealth of resources regarding issues to discuss with your son/daughter regarding being “on-line” in the 2000’s this is a website to make a favorite:   http://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/educate-families/tip-sheets

Finally I am asking to get caught up on the Reading Around the World therefore don’t spend too much time with your son or daughter but please catch up on that form and have it brought in by Friday.   I suggested trying your best to remember the books that they have read and them add them up.  If you have forgotten the page numbers in a particular book, just look it up on Amazon.com and their book listing will have page numbers.

Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Week 31 and Day 129

Holy pi!! We were blessed with a cornucopia of delicious pies on Friday’s Pi Day.    We ran the gamut of pies from delicious “personal” chicken pot pies, various fruit pies (apple, peach, strawberry/rhubarb, cherry, and berries), coconut cream, banana cream, chocolate cream, pumpkin pie, and even “root beer pie.”   Thank you to everyone who donated a pie on Friday, the kids really enjoyed them.    As a follow up have them explain to you why ordering a larger pizza is money better spent than purchasing a smaller pizza.

Today  we had a great Soul Shoppe assembly.   “I” messages, “the clean up” and appreciating the diversity of each other.

Dead President Report!!   We went over the deadlines and the discussed the expectations on Friday and Monday.  Today the students should have brought home the written expectations.   Their first task is to find one or two books about their chosen president.   This project is equally herculean as the book project therefore I have cancelled the third trimester book project so the student efforts can be focused on this challenging report Since we were over 11 weeks away from the book project due date I figured this would be ok, however students that did start early can turn in what they have done for extra credit.
**Get those president books!!!

We did more work with fractions today reviewing the chapter on equivalent fractions, common denominators, and fractions “out in the wild.”

We are starting a unit on “using context clues” to figure out the meaning of words.  The kids did some reading today about this and answered some questions as a class.  The focus on this unit, which came about from a noticed Scootpad trend, is to help students infer the meaning of challenging words where they do not always have access to a smartphone/computer or “old-school” dictionary.

Listening vs hearing…
We continue to practice our listening skills throughout the class.  Much of it stems from some peoples desire to be emotionally “heard” constantly but the constant talking out comes with the cost of the classroom’s learning environment.
So we watched this video on a listening expert.

Science -- they keep plugging away with photosynthesis.  There is a homework assignment due called “Cellular Respiration”

March 13, 2014, Week 30 and Day 126

I was not in class today.  I was on site doing professional development with my 5th grade peers.   From conversations with the substitute teacher and her lengthy detailed write-up it sounded/read like some students struggled with their behavior choices.

They did participate in a reading comprehension exercise as a class and also learned about the Intolerable Acts during the colonial times.

They also had an opportunity to review pi, work out some circle circumference and area of a circle in preparations for tomorrow’s Pi Day!!   They also used www.brainpop.com to watch and learn about Pi and circle calculations.

We of course worked on division of fractions.   Students also performed some Scootpad grammar and language arts practice.  We visited the library.  Finally students had time to complete their “birthday party” budget work.

Kind Regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Week 30 and day 124

Late night email……

Today we continued to plug away on the Seaman and Corp of Discovery.  Today we read and learned about their trip from the Bitterroots Mountains through the…….Pacific Ocean.   So we covered the food, the tribes, and the fun riding with stream of water.

They then rotated to onto science with Mrs. Rodriguez.  They did receive homework due for next Monday therefore check in with them.

With math we are reviewing topic 11.  Therefore we practiced the term “multiples,” “least common denominator,” “adding and subtracting fractions” and decomposing mixed numbers.

In the afternoon students had the option to work on tonight’s math, work on their birthday party project (due Friday),  Qwertytown, Scootpad, and IXL.com

I do apologize that the handouts for the rest of the week are not yet ready, our “copy machine” has a broken part and the part had to be special ordered.  The rumor is that McGovern may make an heroic cache of copiable things to the district office is the part does not come in tomorrow.

The April 10th field trip to Intel is on. I will get running on locking down this down later on this week.

Day 123 of week 30, March 10, 2014

I have not gone an entire week without an update for a mighty long time.  I apologize for the rudeness in communication.  32 report cards combined with a terrible sinus infection along with “Coach Ron” duties -- made it challenging and I plumbed either battling sinus headaches or exhausted.

To quote Shaquille O'Neal “I’m about 88.5% back to full health.”  So we are off to discuss the past and what is going forward.

Report Cards went home on Friday.  If you have questions regarding the grades or my comments please call or email.  Like I said above I was dealing with a horrific sinus induced headache and/or fever from Wednesday evening through Friday therefore if something doesn’t look right, please contact me.

Students all have access and are asked to check their www.engrade.com accounts to stay current on homework and our other assessments.  I also sent you sometime in December invites to open up your account with www.engrade.com if you want to watch it yourself.  If you put in your main email address in the “forgot password” section, it will send you a new password.  If it doesn’t recognize the email address, contact me and I can help get things straightened out.

Pi Day.   March 14th every year is national Pi Day (3 14)
Here is some more information:

Therefore if you would like to donate a pie for Friday’s event that would be greatly appreciated.

Math:
We are getting near the end of the chapters so over the next two weeks we will be wrapping up and reviewing the main concepts.  We really want to have the students leave 5th grade having a strong handle on fractions.  Therefore a large “fraction” of our time will be spent reviewing these important concepts.

Today’s lesson was all about how fractions and decimals are related.  Brainpop has a great video lesson on this.
So does our friends at Khan Academy:

With language arts and reading comprehension we keep practicing the idea of pulling out quotes from what we are reading to build the habit of using what we are actually reading to infer and create our opinions/assumptions.

We did read today how the Corp of Discovery just survived getting through the Bitterroot Mountains.  After five plus days of famine they did make it to the other side and were served dried salmon, root vegetable cakes and other native plants.  They ate so much however they had either an intolerance for the root vegetables or a bacteria on the salmon and they suffered from diarrhea, gas and flu-like symptoms.

Have a wonderful Monday.  It is nice to have more light out.
