Day 123 of week 30, March 10, 2014

I have not gone an entire week without an update for a mighty long time.  I apologize for the rudeness in communication.  32 report cards combined with a terrible sinus infection along with “Coach Ron” duties -- made it challenging and I plumbed either battling sinus headaches or exhausted.

To quote Shaquille O'Neal “I’m about 88.5% back to full health.”  So we are off to discuss the past and what is going forward.

Report Cards went home on Friday.  If you have questions regarding the grades or my comments please call or email.  Like I said above I was dealing with a horrific sinus induced headache and/or fever from Wednesday evening through Friday therefore if something doesn’t look right, please contact me.

Students all have access and are asked to check their www.engrade.com accounts to stay current on homework and our other assessments.  I also sent you sometime in December invites to open up your account with www.engrade.com if you want to watch it yourself.  If you put in your main email address in the “forgot password” section, it will send you a new password.  If it doesn’t recognize the email address, contact me and I can help get things straightened out.

Pi Day.   March 14th every year is national Pi Day (3 14)
Here is some more information:

Therefore if you would like to donate a pie for Friday’s event that would be greatly appreciated.

Math:
We are getting near the end of the chapters so over the next two weeks we will be wrapping up and reviewing the main concepts.  We really want to have the students leave 5th grade having a strong handle on fractions.  Therefore a large “fraction” of our time will be spent reviewing these important concepts.

Today’s lesson was all about how fractions and decimals are related.  Brainpop has a great video lesson on this.
So does our friends at Khan Academy:

With language arts and reading comprehension we keep practicing the idea of pulling out quotes from what we are reading to build the habit of using what we are actually reading to infer and create our opinions/assumptions.

We did read today how the Corp of Discovery just survived getting through the Bitterroot Mountains.  After five plus days of famine they did make it to the other side and were served dried salmon, root vegetable cakes and other native plants.  They ate so much however they had either an intolerance for the root vegetables or a bacteria on the salmon and they suffered from diarrhea, gas and flu-like symptoms.

Have a wonderful Monday.  It is nice to have more light out.
