Social Studies Notes for next American Revolution test

We are not sure of the exact date we will have our next test, tentatively on February 8 or 9th.

Here are our notes so far:
Episode #4
Liberty or Death
Special Guest -- Patrick Henry
Having travelled to Virginia to buy a new press, Moses sees his brother Cato about to be sold into slavery, and attempts to stop it, while the kids hear that Patrick Henry is about to rally the southern patriots.

Moses travels with others to the South and must carry proof of him being free the entire time.   Important under the stress that free African-Americans had to endure when leaving non enlightened colonies.
As depicted in the movie, slaves were sold in auctions and they were thought of as property and less than human.
Also as in Moses’ family, often slave families were broken apart for economic or business purposes.

Patrick Henry “Give me liberty or give me death!”  and also "If this be treason, make the most of it."   His speeches helped inspire Virginia and other southern states to join Massachusetts and begin putting a militia together.

Episode #5
Midnight Ride
Special Guest -- Paul Revere
James and Sarah travel to Boston with a message from the Mechanics, reconnect with Dr. Warren, and join Paul Revere and William Dawes on their midnight ride

We originally think the British army is moving from Boston into New York.   However they will move to Concord and Lexington.

Paul Revere and Dawes work will ensure that the colonists can keep their supply of artillery.

Episode #6
The Shot Heard Round the World
James and Sarah witness the Battles of Lexington and Concord, where Sarah's cousin Tom is killed
Special guest:  John Parker

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War.

Minute Men = militia = colonial soldiers
Regulars = British soldier  = Redcoats

At Lexington Redcoats or Minute Men may have fired the first shots, however the militia was outnumbered and retreated back to Concord.   Not really a “battle” since colonists were few and they did not wish to engage.

The first real battle took place in Concord and militia surprised and more than held their own against the professional British soldiers.   As far the colonies are concerned this is the beginning of the War, however keep in mind the Declaration of Independence would not be written for another year.

From Wikipedia:
Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his "Concord Hymn", described the first shot fired by the Patriots at the North Bridge (in Concord) as the "shot heard 'round the world."

Tuesday #89 2011 2012

Day 89 of the school year....

Let’s start off with our Outdoor Education, aka 5th grade camp.

We currently have 8.5 chaperons that have acquired the “packet” from Mrs. Bastida in the front office and then completed all of the arduous tasks that are outlined and expected in our litigious C.Y.A. society that we live in.   The required paperwork, TB test and finger print clearance take several weeks and by law anyone working around children must have these safety checks.

The school needs to send off its non-refundable deposit sometime in March.  Therefore  we require 10.5 more volunteers.   If we don’t have 18 cleared volunteers by Friday, March 3rd we will need to cancel this year’s trip.

The trip is from Tuesday morning through Friday afternoon.  We have a ½ because you can choose to trade off with a buddy (e.g. we have had 1 person work Tuesday/Wednesday and another Thursday/Friday or we have had person work days and someone work nights).

If you can help out and ensure the camp will go on , please pick-up the paperwork in the office ASAP from Mrs. Bastida.

Projects -- another 6 presentations were completed today.  We had a French Indian War project, Mount Rushmore project, weapons and other war information, Native Americans during the American Revolution, war artifacts and ancestry, and a “talk show” full of great Revolutionary information.

We hope to finish on Thursday!

CNN Students -- Students learned and wrote about the terrible weather in the state of Alabaman, tonight’s State of the Union, the Chinese Year of the Dragon and how London is securing itself for the 2012 Olympic games.

Science -- homework is 37,38 and 39 due tomorrow.

Math -- more work with decimals.
We corrected last night’s homework and worked on more examples.  Students earning 75% or above were practicing on IXL.com letter G topics while the other students worked with me.   For many I believe the light bulb is coming on regarding decimal multiplication.
See the notes of what we practiced right here.

They ended the day with Mrs. Cargo.

Monday #88 2011 2012

Day 88 and week #20 of the 2011 2012 school year...

First off thank you to everyone who were so so generous with my birthday gift.   It means so much that you were all so giving during these economic times.  I hope you know both my family and myself send you our deepest gratitude.

Today -- I just came out of a 90 minute teacher meeting so this is going to be quick today.

CNN Students -- They focused their questions and note taking on the violence happening in Nigeria and how do events happening in Africa and other countries effect us in America.  They also wrote about how topsy turvy things are going in the Republican race for the President nomination since there have been three big election days and three different winners.

DEAR time, spelling pretest and then social studies.

Today we learned about the ride of Paul Revere and discussed the upcoming battles at Concord and Lexington.

Math today -- more work with decimal multiplication.
Students are still struggling with pre-estimating to help them make “logical” or “realistic” decisions when deciding where to place the decimal.
See the notes of what we practiced right here.

Circle Time -- “If you were in a crisis of some-kind and were under a great deal of stress, name the friend that you would turn to”
We had God, various pets, stuffed animals, mom, dad, older siblings and friends within the class.

Get ready for the week in the day planner and talk about planning accordingly.  We did this early today due to the 1:10 p.m.  DES Spelling Bee.   Our three students, Brooke, Drew, and Addison,  represented C-5 well.  It was clear that the contest mattered to them and that they were trying their best.  Kudos go out them for caring and wanting to be their best!!

Thank you again for your generosity and appreciating my profession :)

Thursday #86 2011 2012

Day 86

Technology Lab day --- click here to preview what we did

The kids were really really excited to learn more about all of the SOPA news that led to Google blacking out their name and Wikipedia not working for 24 hours.  Unfortunately we tried to watch the Khan academy video on this issue but everyone else must have had the same idea as it froze up on us.

However the kids watched a great lesson on how a business works, it is the video about running a cupcake business.    Watch it here    I had a great conversation with one student at recess how he appreciated learning about this because “these are the issues that I think about.”  I said, “what do you mean?” and he replied, “people need to think about how much it costs to make the cupcakes so they know how much to charge.”

As a related aside, I try to have the kids watch a lesson on a topic that I think will increase their overall breadth of knowledge and still be relevant beyond the May testing.   So as a class we watched a video on  Ponzi Schemes since it is something that gets brought up pretty frequently and it brings many people financial pain & suffering if they get caught up in it.   In Tuesday night’s reading on David Akers, it mentions that he lost millions in a Ponzi Scheme.  The kids were excited to discuss how he was suckered and lost $$ in something they had learned about a few months prior.

Library time -- the class only has four outstanding books out at this time!! Strong work.

Math:
We spent time reviewing last night’s homework.  We had some response device challenges and it also became readily apparent which three students did not do their homework.
About ½ the class could really use some more practice mastering this concept that will help them with math and WITH SCIENCE.
Click here to have them practice multiplication with 10, 100, 1000 on IXL
Click here to have them practice division with 10, 100, 1000 on IXL

Here are our math notes from today.

Reading review of the Tim Tebow and more discussions on how to effectively reading non-fiction writing.

U.A. time with Mrs. Cargo

Spelling Bee -- We had a super long spelling battle today in class.  This year’s class did exceptionally well.  We had to pull out the 6th grade spelling bee words since they dominated the 5th grade words.  In the end our final three spellers who will represent C-5 will be Brooke, Addison and Drew!!

Wednesday #85 2011 2012

Day 85
A little bit more narrative tonight.

We started off the day with CNN Students.
Students discussed and wrote about the boat overturning in Italy.  They had to think and write about the challenges of rescuing or researching a boat that has turned itself over.  They also learned about and wrote about an amazing man, Kyle Maynard, that successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.  What makes this super amazing?  Maynard was born with a condition called congenital amputation. His arms stop at the elbows and his legs end near his knees.

We spent 40 minutes reviewing last night’s math homework and going over some still challenging fraction concepts.  We then took the chapter 12 test.

We then took the science test on PH, acids, and reading the periodic table of elements.  All the students completed the test prep homework and 12 students made the sacrifice and completed extra credit!!!  Great job!

The students then had their 2nd straight Great day with their singing teacher/class!!

After singing and lunch we reviewed last night’s article on 49er David Akers.  We then completed the Big Fox handout.  Strong work to those 22 out of 28 students that successfully completed their assignment on time!!
Here is tonight’s article
Here is another link to the big fox handout

We then reviewed as an entire class today’s math lesson.  It is all about multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1000;   This is an important concepts because when speaking with Wells Middle School science teachers they say the students must do many metric conversion so they need this skill in their math toolbox.
Here are our notes from today.

Students that chose not to complete last night’s reading assignment or needed time to complete today’s math test spent the last 30 minutes working on that.

The other students, we had a special circle time.  We discussed why we must stop using the word “retarded” in class or at the playground.  Click here for more information on why this has become such a hurtful word.   We also spoke about ending the use of the word “gay”;  I made a point not to discuss what it means in specifics.  Rather we had a rather enlightening conversation about how it used to mean “happy and joyful {i.e. the Flinstones intro song}) and how do words over time change in meaning, acceptance and usefulness.

Also our class is going to be further strengthened with a student teacher.  Her name in Mrs. Cooper.  She is a local Dubliner who is choosing to give back and teach in the community she grew up in.   I think that is so cool when that happens, it really shows our kids how a legacy matters and how important it is to give back.  She is in her second trimester of a four trimester program (that is a loooong time to work pro-bono).  Therefore she is still in the observation, case-study and survey mode.  Therefore unlike Mrs. Silva who was teaching a significant amount, Mrs. Cooper will be here on Mondays, Wednesdays and in the mornings on Thursdays and teaching some in small groups while also observing and learning from your sons/daughters, my fellow teachers and myself.

Thursday #82 2011 2012

Day 82

A beautiful day with beautiful learning going on.

Today the students completed their projects and we begin presenting them tomorrow.  We usually present until the class becomes extremely squirrely since seeing 18 different projects can take a little bit of time.

Math -- we reviewed and analyzed all 40 questions with the mathathon project.  As a class the students struggled with subtracting with fractions, large division and some place-value (specifically decimals).
Here is another lesson on dividing fractions.
Here is one more lesson on dividing fractions
Word problem with division & fractions

Social studies test -- it was all based on our notes.

U.A. time -- number lines and beginning the unit on geometry.

Grammar -- reviewed commas and discussed contemporary grammar versus classical grammar.

CNN students -- Questions on what it takes to run and become the President of the USA, unrest in South Africa since there is a shortage of college opportunities and rioting & protesting in Syria.
