Thursday, October 28, 2010

Today -- I was in a morning meeting, returned and then I had to attend a district training from 11:30 onwards.  Therefore  Mr. Cross returned and manned the ship from 11:30 onward.

What transpired today:
This morning while I was at the meeting, the students had to first complete their math test and/or district narrative writing assignment.  Students who had completed that assignment were encouraged to go to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com watch lessons 9-1 and 9-2;  They also could work on science, tonight’s math, or complete the reading comprehension for the week.

When I returned we reviewed the grammar lessons for the week, the suffix
-ic and
–ive
http://wordinfo.info/unit/1105
http://wordinfo.info/unit/1029

We reviewed the vocabulary work book pages for the week as well.

We then began a mini lesson regarding factoring.  I showed them how we can use primary factoring to solve division problems, reduce fractions, equivalent fractions and LCD/GCF;
I also reviewed all of the divisibility rules:
http://math.about.com/library/bldivide.htm
We also discussed why prime numbers are unique.  Ask your son/daughter what is the only even prime number?

Tomorrow or 100% for sure on Tuesday, we are going to review this lesson from the gurus over in Alameda:
http://www.acoe.org/acoe/files/EdServices/Factoring.swf

We then went to our Buddies Class to do a Halloween activity.   Our students helped them with reciting #’s off a die, using a chart to complete information,  and drawing/creating a funny Halloween face.  They then read with their buddy at the end of our visit.

After returning from Buddies, they watched a Brainpop movie about...factoring and prime numbers.

They then finished the day with Mrs. Cargo and Mrs. Wilmott.

Misc. Stuff:
Please see the email from Missy and Angela about the Election Cafe

Halloween:
From Principal Thomas, “Please remember that during our parade on October 29th, TOY WEAPONS OR ACCESSORIES SUCH AS SWORDS, PLAY GUNS, LASER LIGHTS, ETC. ARE NOT ALLOWED ON CAMPUS.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation. “

The more the merrier, please feel free to come visit/participate;  The district asks that you sign in as a visitor with the office.
Parade starts at 9:00 a.m.
Fear Factor Game starts at 10:30
Snacks and Treats will be served at 1:15’ish
Please read this week’s Shark Byte for all the Halloween information:

I spoke with the kids today...our buddies and all the kindergartners really love the “big” “older” 5th graders.  Therefore their costumes for school should be suitable for an audience that goes as young as 5 years old.    I asked them to please save the blood, severed heads and scary masks for Sunday evening so we don’t give our kindergarten buddies any nightmares.

Friday is our Halloween celebration AND ALSO spelling/vocab test and comprehension work.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Super quick while the Giants are still in game 1......
Library -- FYI next week Mrs. Klein will not be in the library as she prepares for the upcoming book fair.  Therefore 2 weeks from now we will go to the library to make book wish lists so be prepared to be begged :)

Complete the district writing assessment, work on homework, observe the chapter 9 lessons on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com or free-choice reading.

We then reviewed last night’s math homework.  We discussed 3 questions that gave the class a hard time so hopefully they felt successful prior to taking the test.

We then spent time taking our chapter 5 test.  Those that finished early had the same choices as before:
Complete the district writing assessment, work on homework, observe the chapter 9 lessons on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com or free-choice reading.

We finished finalizing and agreeing to the definitions for this week’s 5 challenge words.
Here are our definitions:
Our Classroom Definitions

Rotations -- Cargo and then Wilmott/science
Homework for Wilmott -- page 2 and 7 vocabulary cards.  See her website for more details.

Regarding math -- I assigned the chapter 9 introduction video and the 9-1 lesson tutorial/lesson for every student today.   So if they go to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com and watch the video they should do prepared for tonight’s homework.   About 1/2 the class did not have time to do this in class since they took longer on their math test.

Tomorrow -- wear RED

Friday is our Halloween celebration AND ALSO spelling/vocab test and comprehension work.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Social Studies the week of October 27 and 28th

This week we are focusing on the Tuesday, November 2nd election.  Today we discussed what is a typical polling place in Dublin like while answering many of their questions.

Students were curious if people knew who or what  you vote.  We also discussed voter fraud, Australia's mandatory voting versus our style and how to find out how to vote.

**Mrs. Cargo's class was extremely disrespectful and more interested in making jokes among themselves rather than politely talking & learning.  They owe a 1 or 2 paragraph description of today's notes.

I have posted the notes from today to help them with their bonus learning opportunity.

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

We started the day in the computer lab.  We practiced typing for 20 minutes, we practiced for tomorrow’s math test, we watched some Brainpops related to narrative writing and finally they played some educational games.
Here is the run down of what they did in the lab today:
http://mrhubbardsclass.blogspot.com/2010/10/computer-lab-on-october-26-2010.html

We then took our district writing that was on narrative writing.  We reviewed what we have learned so far, what we discussed & learned in the computer lab and we talked about some exceptional ones written in class.   The narrative took a full 75 minutes and some students have not completed their final drafts yet.

Math:
Students completed a 15 review quiz while in the computer lab.  If they missed a question, www.pearsonsuccessnet.com would offer them the video to watch and learn the subject again.  The students also input their homework answers from last night into the computer so they could discover which one(s) they missed.  We reviewed the problems that they hadn't correctly solved.
As a reminder, I have attached both the practice test and its answers.

We had a great conversation yesterday based on a question about posting the answers.  We discussed not to just say, “oh yeah, it was D not A.”  I modeled and we talked about using the knowledge of the correct answer to discover where you made a mistake or why the correct answer is the correct answer.
The homework and the answers can be found here:
http://www.box.net/shared/8hcenbm024

They ended the day with PE.

This is Red Ribbon week therefore the day’s have different themes.
Wednesday is dress up like a Rockstar
Thursday is just wear Red.
Friday is our Halloween celebration AND ALSO spelling/vocab test and comprehension work.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

We had the big dedication to the new and improved Dublin Elementary School.  We had numerous dignitaries, we had great student singing, a great student speech and the weather played nice.  At the end, most importantly, we had easily the largest pair of scissors that I have ever seen.

Spelling Pretest....

DEAR time...students were able to meet with me one on one and discuss where they stood on Reading Around the World, www.pearsonsuccessnet.com and any other questions during my absence.

Math -- we had a mini review on Orders of Operations.  Many students were happy with their performance in the quiz so we re-reviewed the concept of
parentheses
exponents
multiplication or division (whichever comes first when you go left to right)
addition or subtraction (whichever comes first when you go left to right)
Students then had 25 minutes to begin tonight’s homework which is preparing for the Wednesday test.

Language Arts --
We reviewed the grammar lessons for the week:
Verbs in past tense
Verbs in the future
Verb tense being used correctly

This week’s comprehension lessons are all about telling what is the main point in a non-fiction passage.

We reviewed the vocabulary for this week’s story.  Most students paid attention so they have completed pb 113 and it will not be homework.

We ended the day with 20 minutes documenting the homework for the week and discussing how to prioritize our week.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Sorry for the no email last night...I was up late correcting 75 Constitution tests.  Kids have their graded Constitution tests back.

Today -- technology lab.  We worked on typing for 20 minutes.  Then we spent the remainder of our time perfecting our narrative essays.  The biggest suggestion has been encouraging the students to supply MORE details in their writing.

We returned to class and discussed the narrative and we looked a student’s narrative that was on
the right track.
Here are the guidelines and notes that they should have:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?id=1CrkynbMbABN8myymkt8P6-_hkl--EZS6sHLf5Ezisew&hl=en&authkey=CIP256AP

Students will still have time to work on these narratives over the next two days.
