Wednesday #88 2012-2013

Day 88 of Week 21

Wednesday are our big day of getting things done.  Especially if we do not have the weather to allow us to have a nice afternoon walk.

We began the day working on more comprehension work from last week’s Paul Revere story.  We discussed the difference between opinions and factions.   We took that lesson further and discussed how an author’s perspective or point of view will influence what you are reading (both facts and opinions).  

This lead us to a Brainpop regarding on-line resources, how to verify and how to discover if you are using a legitimate source.  
This lead to discussions regarding:

Why wikipedia is a legitimate starting point and a great source of information.  

We then went over the grammar and the vocabulary practice book pages for the week. Therefore students have a large head start on the Thursday and Friday homework (we covered about 1/3rd of the questions while in class).

25 minutes of working on homework w/ Miss Sandy or myself or reading for enjoyment.

Tomorrow we have a special PE morning session.  So wear appropriate shoes and warm clothes.

We also are doing an in-class spelling competition to find our top three spellers for Friday’s big shin-dig.

Day 87 of Week 21

I had some giddy-up in my step for the first time in about 10 days!!  My bronchitis may have finally run its course so I can move around the class without feeling I am hanging out in outrageous altitude.  

Tomorrow please remember to turn in the money for the read-a-thon fundraiser if your family chose to participate in the fund raiser.    If you are collecting my amount read, I have the numbers here at school and Ms. Sandy told all the kids their total minutes.  However if you need it, email me and I can send it to you in the morning.  

Today -- Technology Tuesday
However we had to cut it short due to having to get a ton of stuff done due to it being a short week.  
We spent 15 minutes on typing.
We spent 15 minutes on scootpad working on language arts vocabulary and grammar.  
We spent 15 minutes on www.ixl.com working on our fraction knowledge or geometry for the Math/Art test

Wednesday, #84 2012 2013 (1/16/13)

Day 84
Thank you for all of the wipes and the vegetable soup that came in today!!  We will be healthy in no time at all.

Today, we closed out our read-a-thon with 30 minutes of silent reading.  Students were also encouraged to review their Chapter 12 fraction notes during this time.

We then completed our chapter 12 test.  

After the test we began our new lesson on adding and subtracting fractions.  Today is adding and subtracting like denominators therefore I have no “special” ways to teach it.  The big thing for the students to watch out for is to “simplify” their final answer whenever possible.  

Since this came up based on our chapter 12 test and some of the kids not preparing and prepping like they should have, we read this article as a class:

We had a discussion about how for many this entail wanting to use my resources, watching Khan Academy or using the wonderful practice grounds of www.ixl.com

Students then did a 20 minute free-write about motivation and desire and how they control that aspect of their life.

We continued practicing appositives.  We corrected Monday’s homework and reviewed the two new handouts.  

We then read as a class and discussed the story of Paul Revere.  

Finally we discussed writing a proper business letter by reading some outrageous business letters written into corporations by a comedian and the real letters he received back.

Finally the last 30 minutes of the day we wearily took a walk outside in the beautiful sunshine.

Tuesday, #83 2012 2013 (1/15/13)

Day 83

I return from the injured reserved today to get back to teaching.

I somehow acquired strep throat, bronchitis and an ear-infection; all three at the same time!!  The positive side of me says that this is great because it meant I caught an entire winter season of yuckies at all one time.  So I have met and/or exceeded my 2013 quota for germs.  

Today in the computer lab today we practiced typing for 20 minutes.  We then took a chapter 12 pre-test and we used our results to practice more multiplying and dividing fractions on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com or www.ixl.com

We then began our chapter 12 test.    Miss Sandy and I began perusing what they have done so far and we sent the kids home today with the desire for them to continue reviewing and practicing their multiplying and dividing fractions.

Tuesday, #78 2012 2013 (1/08/13)

Day 78
Today is the first posting of 2013!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break.  The students had many great stories to share out on Monday when we bragged a little about what went down over the two weeks.

Today was a Technology Tuesday.
Here is the link that we tried to follow.  
It was a weird day with some students able to accomplish certain things on the computer while other students were unable.  The technology gremlins frequently add a layer of spontaneity to our visits to the computer lab.  

Math:
Final fraction review day with division.
Students are encouraged to practice and know both methods for division.  
Please see the notes for reference.

Science

Math Art

The Readathon is still going strong.    Therefore students are required and encouraged to read this week and next week once they complete their math, science or math/art homework.  
I am asking for a minimum of 25 minutes of reading every night instead of assigning spelling, grammar and free-writes.  If you are seriously reading then you are further exposing yourself to correctly spelled, correct grammar and reading “ideally” well written work.  

Thank you for all of the generosity that you showed to our adopted holiday family and towards myself.     

• I am truly blessed to work in such a giving community and I highly appreciate you making the time/effort to give me a gift at the holiday season.

Students MUST show work on graph paper.  They are turning in the graph paper not the floppy page since students need to analyze and see their mistakes.

Read “at least” 25 minutes every night.  Bring the reading log into class every single day proving your read the previous night.

We do have science homework due on Thursday.  I am sorry that I don’t have the specifics.

Thursday, #75 2012 2013 (12/20/12)

Day 75
The day before the winter break.  Where children’s minds wander and they are thinking of their time off.    So it can take 10 minutes to get done what usually takes 5 minutes.

Here is what we were able to accomplish today:
Math review of multiplying and dividing fractions
We took a four question review of those two concepts and this would be a great winter break project for many of the students to practice on www.ixl.com;

On www.ixl.com there are the following headings in 5th grade:
Multiply fractions
Divide fractions
Fractions and mixed numbers
Here are our notes from today and for this chapter 12 on fractions.

This led into us doing our reading log check up.

We then had Mrs. Buchanan’s class come by and try out our Caine’s Arcade.   On January 11, 2013 we are going to formally set up our Arcade and invite grades to come in and play the games.

We then went to our Buddies class.  There we shared hot chocolate as we watched the first twenty minutes of the Polar Express.  Then we took time to enjoy homemade snowmen cookies and they read a holiday story to their little buddy.

After buddies they had their big science test on the water cycle.

After lunch they had another geometry lesson with the math/art rotation.

Finally we ended the day with a great class and video taught by Mrs. Phipps about modern day bullying.  It covered topics such as cyber bullying, in-school bullying, and mental or physical bullying.

We voted as a class that we would enjoy wearing our pajamas to tomorrow’s holiday party.  Rules:
1.  Entirely optional, you do not have to dress in PJs.
2.  Appropriate school shoes are still mandatory.
3.  Appropriate clothing and the school dress code still is enforced on a pajama day.

For the students that have chosen to start winter break a little early, they were informed that missing homework had to be completed PRIOR to participating in the holiday party.  They were told this beginning on Wednesday so this is not a shock to them.   I also gave them an explicit reminder before they left today.

Math page 286 is missing by student #’s:  7, 17, 26, and 19

Homework tonight was to read for enjoyment for 50 minutes.  There is no other homework but to read anything that brings them enjoyment for 50 minutes.

Wednesday, #74 2012 2013 (12/19/12)

Day 74 of week 18

Today was an amazing day... I hope if you ask the kids about it they will tell you that it went “quick.”  

We started the day off with math review from last night and a preview of tonight’s lesson.

I asked the students to equally split doing the 10 problems using one of the two ways modeled in class (5 each way)
1.  multiplication after replacing the divisor with its reciprocal.
2.  make both fractions have a common denominator and then divide across

We then had 11 projects presented today.  Many of the students went over the “strongly recommended” 5 minute presentation time therefore we did not cover as many as I would have preferred in the 90+ minutes that we spent.  
One group created an amazing website with research, cross links within their own website, and visually pleasing.  It was amazing.  
We had a cinnamon smelling diorama presented; she used gingerbread dough for the rocks.  
We also had extensive powerpoint presentations and another website covering topics from Lewis, Clark, Colter, York, Newfoundland dogs, and other less famous members on the Corps of Discovery.   We also had an entertaining flipbook presentation on the Corp of Discovery with several funny foot jokes.  
We also had a Corp of Discovery board game where players try to acquire rewards found on their actual journey and get to either Fort Mandan or Bitterroot Mountains.
We also had someone bring in some typical cornmeal bites and beef jerky to go with her presentation on typical food the Corp would have eaten at that time.  She brought in beef jerky because she couldn't bring herself to bring deer or elk jerky.  
Finally we had a group that was seen not using their time wisely during their five hours given in class and then they submitted a presentation that clearly was a rough or first draft in need of more thought, order and research.  

Then we spent 90 minutes working on our Caine’s Arcade art and project work.   Some of the big things coming out of the fun but productive time -- seeing students persevere when their original idea(s) don’t work out like they plan, their natural curiosity and willingness to think differently and their ability to make amazing things out of limited resources.    









I’ve included some photos so you can see what we have accomplished so far.

Finally we ended the day with having their science and Battle of Trenton tests returned.  I also gave a pep speech about making sure to “study” & memorize the science study guide for tomorrow’s big test.  

Readathon -- students are to bring their daily reading log back and forth from home and school.  Students are encouraged to try and out read me.   I will be assigning reading instead of some homework assignments.  Therefore students will need to bring in daily verification that they are in fact reading.  Students that choose participate in the fund-raiser part will have lunch w/ me and decide in how the money is spent.  

See below about the adopt a family in need that we are doing for our Friday party.   Students seemed excited to shop for kids that are similar in age to them and help others during the holiday season.
