Welcome back!! Happy 2011.

We started off the day with 30 minutes of silent reading.  We also discovered that the County of Alameda that supplies all of our Internet connectivity was having some connectivity issues.  So the gang of students wanting to take AR tests and see where they left off in math could not do that.  I also had to kick it “old school” with the teaching, well not totally the dark ages since the Smart Board still worked fine.  Just we had no access to Internet/email during the day.

Students then did an in-class free-write about............you guessed it, “what did you do over your 2 week holiday?”
We then discussed again how to write a great 5 paragraph essay.  We spent time today discussing the introduction paragraph and the conclusion paragraph.   The notes should be in their notebook, if not, we captured our ideas on Smartboard.  I attached the link with all the notes right here:http://www.box.net/shared/static/4ukbo6voyu.pdf

Tomorrow we will cover the 3 body paragraphs.  How to stay on topic, how to “hand off” to fellow paragraphs and about putting this all together.
The final 5 paragraph essay will be due on Friday the 14th.  I prefer  that the final draft is typed out.

Newest Theme Project -- we just completed theme 3 when the holiday began.  Therefore the over the next two weeks students will be researching, learning and putting together a presentation related to the American Revolution.  Presentations will begin on Tuesday the 18th.

We began reviewing the theme 3 review test.  Students and I discussed view point, perspective and opinions.  We also went over what else the rest of the theme test will cover.   The handout which will be similar to our discussion and note taking today will come out tomorrow.
Also their grammar packet regarding the grammar review will come out as well tomorrow.

Math--
We reviewed the math lessons that we covered and did prior to the 2 weeks off.  We did examples on the board and discussed the concepts (e.g. Venn diagram and the bubble method).
Since it was review and concepts they hadn’t worked on for two weeks, students were given 35 minutes to work in class on tonight’s review homework:
266-267  Sections A,B,C and D -- all problems.

Here are our notes -- http://www.box.net/shared/static/4ukbo6voyu.pdf

Plan for the week and write in our day planners....students did this the last part of the day.

****We have a field trip on the 18th!!****
It is the awesome field trip to Lawrence Livermore Lab.  If you can drive and be a chaperon that would be highly appreciated.   Sorry we don’t need chaperon only people.  The labs are super super small and the Lab asks that we take a minimum amount of people.
We leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. and drive to the Lab;
We return prior 12:30.
You can possibly only take a ½ day at work if you need to work it out with your employer.
If you can just drive to and from that is fine as well.  The field trip takes place in a self-enclosed visitor's center and then in a real lab.  So if you only get away to drive us to the lab and back, that would be fine as well.
Regarding field trip paperwork, I will send home the permission slip tomorrow.  I will also include the driving paperwork.   If you have not filled out the paperwork this school year, you will need to do so again.  Also often the insurance paperwork is usually only good for 6 months or less, so you may need to send in your most up to date insurance paperwork as well.
