Wednesday #81 2011 2012
For the first time this year, our class earned a “super 50+ stars!!!!!” Coming off their great respectful behavior on Tuesday, this was great on our way to having this become a habit. Awesome, awesome job!!
CNN students -we focused our notes on the New Hampshire primary, fuel subsidies in Nigeria, and they took us on a preview of the Consumer Electronics Show.
DEAR time -- a few students forgot their Reading Around the World log, please bring those in.
Math: the entire class participated in our lesson on division with mixed numbers.

Word problem with division & fractions
Science -- pages 32 and 33 and a big test is coming up so be on the look out for the study guide.
Vocab -- the kids hit a homerun today. Their posters or vocab cards were amazing. Tons of humor and creativity in capturing what the words mean.
Singing -- see above, they earned their first Super of the year.
Circle time and Read Aloud.
We read this great book, One, which covers bullying, how people not being bullied need to rally together to stop the bullying and how there are strength in numbers but it takes “one” to step and protect the bullied.
Here is the book being read by the author.
So we had a great talk about the messages in the book. If you had time, it would be great to ask your son or daughter about what messages or ideas from the book and the circle-time stood with them today.

Tuesday #80 2011 2012
The class had a Jerry Rice day. They had easily their best behaved and committed to learning day of the year!! I was so so so proud of them during the assembly today.
Today -- we did some extensive practice on the mathathon which is in exactly one week. Students were given 40 questions to practice and given 30+ minutes. The questions will be due back on Thursday.
We then had our assembly with Joseph Savage of Soul Shoppe The assembly focused on giving students ways to speak positively and deal with conflict. Having tools to deal with bullying and knowing how to spread positive vibes are timely lessons.
Social Studies -- we took notes and watched the last of the Liberty Kids movie. The test will be on Thursday, as long as the notes are handwritten and in the notebook, your student will do great. Here are the notes that we took.
Science w/ Wilmott -- P.H. balance and positive and negative
DEAR time for 20 minutes
They ended the day with U.A. time.
Friendly reminders:
1. Tomorrow is an early release day due to collaboration
2. Next Tuesday is the mathathon day so go out and get those donations and push that math knowledge!!

Episode #1 w/ special guest: Samuel Adams
Boston Tea Party --not really a “party”; It was clean and orderly “protest”
Bostonians were upset that even though tge discounted tea was cheap, it was being taxed.
Why were they so upset over the taxes?
Sugar Act + Stamp Act + Boston Massacre + colonists not being allowed to elect politicians in Parliament
“No taxation without representation!!” -must know what this phrase means.
England feels they have a right to tax the colonies because of the French and Indian War;
England and colonies fought together (i.e. as buddies) against the French + Indians. This war cost England much $$$ since wars aren’t cheap.
Episode #2: Intolerable Acts w/ special guest Phillis Wheatley
Intolerable Acts -- England is upset over the Boston Tea “Party” They shut down the Boston harbor by increasing their military numbers, the King installed strict curfews, the military began “quartering” people’s homes and England took over the Massachusetts (Mass.) government. These acts angered ALL OF THE COLONIES they viewed the acts as a threat to all the colonies.
Episode #3 of United We Stand w/special guest Abigail Adams
Tory and Loyalists-- colonists that support the King and the Parliament
Patriots -- colonists that support creating their own new country
John Adams (founding father + 2nd President) -- defended British soldiers who shot in “self-defense” during the Boston Massacre. The British soldiers were found “not guilty” however Adams was thought in some circles as a loyalist.
The cartoon talks about tar and feathering a sailor. This was done often by “unruly” patriots. It would humiliate the victim, in many cases the tar and feathering would be brutal (w/ burning, loss of skin and infection).

Monday #79 2011 2012
Better late than never.. The missing man messed up my mojo and we were all strongly encouraged to leave campus immediately after the staff meeting.
Day 79 of our school year...
CNN students we continue plugging away on our note taking and inference skills. Students took notes on both the Dem.’s and Rep.’s versions on why unemployment continues to drop. They discussed how and why our US Navy saved an Iranian fishing boat from modern-day pirates and we learned more about corral reefs and saving ships.
45 minutes of open-ended project time -- students are getting close to completing and practicing for their Friday presentations. They will be given 90 minutes on Thursday to finish up their presentation and practice for Friday.
Spelling pretest -- here are this week’s words.
Math -- more entire class review on how to divide with fractions.
See the math notes from Thursday, Friday and the today. The class average today started out 40%. Many kids were missing the concepts. However I encouraged the kids to “flip off” the divisor and this seemed to help out.
Here are the notes.
Circle Time -- we discussed their weekend, their favorite word, and we had a discussion about being kind to one another, listening and being a “nice respectful person.”
P.E.
Students were given the 30+ minutes to document all of the homework for the week into their day planner.
We then spent some time discussing our letter and photos that came today from President Obama. He sent a quick inspirational cover letter, a map of the Whitehouse, a historical perspective of American art found in the Executive Branch and a question & answer sheet.
Wednesday is a short collaboration day so students go home early.

Wednesday #76 2011 2012
Today -- more practice with note-taking, listening, and writing about what we learned during CNN students Today’s it focused on how a caucus specifically works, the Straight of Hormuz & Iran, and why Samoa changed to the other side of the International Date Line.
DEAR time -- It was asked today if students can bring in their Kindles/ Nooks for DEAR time. That is 100% fine with me however students and family's accept all liability. So a discussion should occur at home what are “best practices” regarding where to store the Kindle and how to safely transport it back and forth. I am willing to house the Kindle/Nook in my cabinets when not being used.
Social Studies -- we are beginning with the American Revolution at the point of the Boston Tea “Party”;
Notes from today and Friday’s lessons can be found on this website in the next 24 hours.
There are opportunities for extra credit and the tests are open-notebook so notes should be “transcribed” into their notebook.
Science -- metals
Homework that is due on Tuesday -- pages 14 and 15
Grammar and Vocab -- we comparing with adjectives (er, est, more, and most) and also comparing with adjectives (better, best, worse and worse)
Singing -- It was the triumphant return of Mrs. Jones; Regrettably the class remained in the “good” category regarding behavior while in class. We will continue striving to bring up our behavior to the “super” level.
Math -- more practice with multiplying and dividing with fractions.

Tuesday #75 2011 2012
Day 75 of this school year.....
It was nice to be back with all of the kids today.
We started the day off with CNN students. The big issues discussed were the Iowa Caucuses, Kinm Jong-il and a series of arson in Los Angeles is causing damage.
We started a new thing today, students were given four questions before watching the segment and asked to take notes and pay attention looking for the answers. I also modeled on the board the notes from the segment that would help them answer the questions. They are then given 10 minutes to answer the four questions.
This achieves three big initiatives -- daily writing practice using inference skills, note-taking skills and ensuring everyone is paying attention to the video.
Circle-Time: Students shared what was their favorite gift that they or their family received and if they had a new year’s resolution. It sounded like the students all had a great winter break and shared great times with their families. I can’t decide what the best gift was though, the IPAD II or a new baby sister?
Science with Mrs. Wilmott -- she broke a bone(s) in her left foot so you can ask your son/daughter for the “unofficial” story.
Homework tonight: get your test signed by your parent and do pages 10, 12 and 13 in their science book.
