September 15, 2014


Happy Monday!!

Today we started off the day with our weekly a discussion regarding diffusion, osmosis and respiration.  This led to a discussion regarding smoking & non-smoking restaurants, chlorinated and non-chlorinated swimming pools, oxygen & our blood stream and finally how this all relates to the phrase “he who smelt it, dealt it.”  Feel free to have them elaborate…

We also had a discussion on what is our “Constitution” and our “Bill of Rights.”  Students then began watching and learning about those two subjects using the Brainpop website.  

Circle time -- What did we discuss?  Describe something from this weekend and what is the most important quality that you look for in a friend

Students took their first monthly reading comprehension assessment using the Accelerated Reader software.  Students can and should begin taking the 10 to 20 questions quizzes associated with all of their reading.  

Math -
A discussion on how tell if a number is greater than or less than when concerning decimals.  I wrote the four rules to follow up on the board and ask that they put them into their math notebook.
**Students can NOT just write < > or =;  they were modeled several times how to write the two original numbers and then place the < > = in relationship to those two numbers.

The end of the day we had 20 minutes to document the homework into their day planner and begin working on homework.  

Finally in preparation for our big “Brain Week” we watched a movie that explained 1. How it is a myth that we only use 10% of our brain and 2. It shows how as a “youth” 60% of the energy consumed by humans is used to keep our brain fully powered and processing on full strength.   

The Lawrence Livermore field trip --- it will for sure NOT be on the Jaws-A-Thon day (10/3/2014).  In order to meet the limited space requirements at Lawrence Livermore Lab -- we are going to send 1/3rd of my class to the lab on the other 3 days.  Once we get 100% ok on this, I’ll send more information out and ask for drivers.

This week:
Brain Week -- all week the students will have a emphasis on understanding how our brain works or what works best for our brain

We will learn and discuss what our Constitution does for our government and for us as individual citizens.
