We hope to enter our poems into the national competition tomorrow while at the computer lab.

We then pushed hard on math review this morning.  We spent nearly 100 minutes reviewing math concepts.
The notes can be found by clicking here.

We this watched a great movie called “Spin”
We watched the movie and then debated on the author’s perspective and the director’s message.

May 3, 2011 -- The first day of state testing

Today was our first day of state testing.  We started off the day as we normally do, with 90 minutes in the computer lab.
We worked on our typing, used a great math website to review, and then they had 15 minutes to decompress before the testing.
Here is the specific technology game plan.

We then prepped the class and the students for the first test.

At 10:30 a.m. we began our Language Arts testing.  Tomorrow will be the same time and it will be section II of the Language Arts.

Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Let's do our 20 minutes of typing practice therefore stop at 8:50.

Let’s work on some specific math:
Click here to access the math website

Choose whichever chapter you believe that you need more practice with.
You may watch. read or play the games that match up with that chapter’s lessons.
At the bottom of each chapter there is a CHAPTER TEST.   Take that test and then email the results to me  hubbardron @ dublin.k12.ca.us

Stop with the math at 8:15’ish.

From 8:15 through 8:30  -- you may practice states/capitals, type in your recipe, read about something important to you, or go to a school appropriate website.  Basically whatever will help you relax and prep yourself for the upcoming state testing.

Camp Arroyo in Livermore.....

We need your camp medicine turned in on Monday, April 16th. Medicines need to be dropped off at the front office. Medicines should NEVER be brought into class.

We leave for camp on the morning of Tuesday, April 17th.
Students are asked to arrive no earlier than 10:30 on that day so you should plan for a later drop off that day.

Students need to bring a bag lunch for Tuesday afternoon.

We arrive back from camp on the afternoon Friday, April 20th 1:20'ish p.m. The school day is over once the students arrive back from camp.  So you should plan for an early pick up at 1:20'ish.
I also have put all of the internet information about Camp Arroyo CLICK HERE FOR THE SERIES OF LINKS

Our May 2nd Classroom Brainstorm!

The next three days will be the heart of our state testing.  We will have language arts on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Then we will take the math portion on Thursday morning.

We spent the time reading, practicing on language arts test prep, reviewing math and peer editing our poems.

We did start of the day discussing the Osama Bin Laden events that occurred last night. since there was a ton of questions and preclass discussion regarding this.  I tried to focus on the facts that I read and observed last night.  I also tried to explain why some people may have experienced a sense of closure regarding this however I encouraged them to speak with their own family about the death penalty and justice.

If your child wants to do some prepping here is the links for California’s released questions:

The key to success is having your student read the short passages three times.
The first time just to read the passage and get a general sense of what the story is about.
The second time, they read it, mark it, star it, and try to underline and decipher the story in a way they can intimately know the passage.
The third read is just basically putting the story in your own words and marking parts that you think will have clues to potential questions.

Math:
We used the response devices and reviewed 14 different questions based on their survey result and reviewing important ideas.
If you want to see our notes CLICK HERE.

They then had 30 minutes to work on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com on challenging 5th grade areas or work  one on one with me.

Finally we peer edited four more well thought out and written poems.

Kind regards,

Mr. Hubbard
