Day 59
It was throwing down rain for a period of time today. Wow!! We had to stop and watch it for a period of time.
Note taking & inference skills:
Cnn Students
More information about Egypt and its current president -- dictator or someone trying to right the ship?
President Obama met with new Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto and discussed immigration, trade and more job opportunities.
“Fiscal Cliff” -- We discussed if this was literal or figurative language? Also what happens if no agreement is reached by January 1, 2013.
Salmonella -- more peanut related bacteria was found in New Mexico so they shut down the plant. We discussed what is salmonella and it also lead to a graphic discussion on tapeworms, Sponge Bob, etc..
Guatemala -- they are using plastic bottles to collect their garbage around their communities. They then use the plastic bottles as “bricks” -- eco friendly and make use of non-biodegradable plastic.
Finally we learned why the Indianapolis Colts have two bald cheerleaders.
Seaman -- The book is catching up to the documentary. Lewis is threatening to burn down villages, the Corp meets up with the Nez Perce, they hold their version of Olympic Games, and they are just about through the Bitterroot Mountains. Tomorrow we read about the battle with the Blackfoot.
Thanksgiving...
Students are going to write three paragraphs.
1. Thanksgiving today
2. The first Thanksgiving
3. What do they have in common.

Incident at the Water Fountain -- This led to a great discussion on how to deal with bullies. Many students had great examples and strong opinions on how to help those being bullied.
Math Review:
We reviewed our algebra and variables.
Based on our trimester 1 test results, this was an area that the entire class would benefit from re-reviewing.

Day 58
All quiet before the big rain storm that is going to hit us over the next 36 hours....
We spent the morning in the computer lab. 20 minutes of typing practice, a lesson on basic economics, a Brainpop on how to properly quote dialogue and at the end we did our first classroom style website/blog. From reading this article. It home how connected learning, sharing out and peer review/peer motivation will be a big importance for this generation. So we are just starting our journey trying out group communication and peer reviews.
Read all about today’s events by clicking here.
Math lesson:
Two parts:
1. -- how to simplify fractions by using the Venn Diagram and discovering the GCF.
2. How to use the power of 1, to make equivalent fractions
Here are our notes from today.
Seaman -- we read and discussed today about the team heading home and leaving Fort Clatsop. Similar to the documentary we are watching, the book captures the almost melancholy attitude among the Corp as they leave a winter of 90+ consecutive days of rain and clouds combined with the arduous task of heading back to St. Louis.
Science -- they are studying about weather right now.
Math/Art.....
Reminder that tomorrow is a collaboration day so the day ends at 1:50.
Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

Day 57
It is so good to be back. I spent my first days of vacation fighting off a 101 fever and flu for 5+ days. Therefore it was easy to be grateful and thankful when the Thanksgiving gathering happened since I was by Thursday back to the living “normal.”.
I was also grateful to have spent so many great meetings with all of the students and their parents. It so dynamic and helpful to see the students interact with their loved ones and see how communication and caring gets displayed within each family.
P.E. today.
Lewis and Clark today -- the group is heading home. They are in a cranky mood. I asked the kids to think about it similar to their experience driving down to Disneyland. The drive there is usually fun and full of excitement. The drive back the students are probably asleep, tired and just ready to sleep at home again. Well that is what the Corp of Discovery was feeling.
The Corp also slapped an Indian for trying to steal their supplies, Lewis threatened to burn down an entire Indian village unless they returned Seaman, and Lewis shot and killed two Blackfoot warriors.
Math
Review of the three lessons that we went over PRIOR to the Thanksgiving break. So no new information was covered.
Here are the notes.
CNN students
Tons of stuff due to the week break.
Israel and Palestine conflict.
Egypt’s “democratically” elected leader may or may not becoming a dictator
Hurricane Sandy -- mold and sewage leakage are two health hazards that are still plaguing many communities.
Reading and Comprehension
We read this story.
About a group of high school football players that band together to protect a mentally challenged student and keep her from being bullied.
Plan out and prepare for the rest of the week.
Many students were choosing not to use this time wisely this week, therefore a “pop-quiz” was given out on the events that we discussed throughout the day.
Wednesday is a collaboration day therefore the day ends at 1:50
December 6th at 8:30 is coffee with Ms. McGovern for all parents

Day 54 of Week 14 in the school year.......
It is a short week this week.
Monday was a holiday to honor our veterans.
Tuesday -- regular
Wednesday --- the day ends at 2:06 because of conferences
Thursday --- the day ends at 2:06 because of conferences
Friday -- no school for the kids
Therefore the homework will be light. I have pleaded with the students to read for enjoyment and work on www.ixl.com. The next three to four chapters will focus on fractions and building up practice with fraction work that www.ixl.com does a great job of offering will be super beneficial.
Thursday’s friendship soup and our chance to give thanks to our friends, family and school.
Miss Sandy is also rotisserize a turkey so there will be some turkey. Another family is bringing rolls. This will all take place at 1:10’ish through 2:00. We will share out what we are thankful for, enjoy the soup that our mini-community combined and created while also preparing to take a hard earned week off. You are welcome to join us in our celebration.
Today’s happenings:
Technology Tuesday for many of the students.
We heard the feedback from PFC meeting and the students practiced for 20 minutes on Mavis Beacon typing software. We will continue to create time for the 20 minutes of typing practice every week.
Here is the game plan we followed.
For the students that our hosting their student led conferences today and early tomorrow morning, they were given 60 minutes to assess their graded materials, read through their report card and then create two school related goals and a character attribute goal. Every student will be given one hour to prepare and plan for their student led meeting. Therefore other students are strongly encouraged to bring a book(s) of their choosing so they can read for enjoyment while others prepare for that day’s conference.
Math:
Fractions are officially in the house!!
For the next three to four weeks it all about fractions.
Here are the notes from today.
After math, we wrote down the homework for the week.
Then the students rotated to science and then math/art.
Kind regards,
Mr. Hubbard

- If your child is not a big fan of vegetable soup and/or turkey, they should still bring a light lunch for 12:30-1:10. We don’t want anyone starving that day.
- Now if your child is a big fan of soup, there will definitely be enough soup. Heck they can bring tupperware and bring some home. So then possibly don’t overload them with a huge lunch.

Wednesday, Day 51
We began the day recapping what we learned about the election. For some it was a time to share out, express their frustrations while for others it was a time to rejoice. It was also a time to correct some “facts” there were being disseminated by both young conservatives & young progressives.
We also discussed our local results regarding some of the propositions, school board winners, city council winners and how our newest House of Representative is a local DUSD alumnus.
CNN Students
It was all about the election results, capturing how people voted (literally the machines), a great helping of presidential trivia and finally some classic old-school president acceptance speeches.
Students also listened to this podcast from the Freakonomics authors about “should a rational person vote?”
The students then did a write about it where they had to answer the question:
Why should you vote? Does voting even matter?
or
Should voting be mandatory like in Australia?
Math
More venn diagram practice to find the GCF.
Also tonight’s homework was all about the Singapore method. So as an entire class we completed problems 1-10. Therefore students should have very little math homework tonight.
Here are our notes on last night’s homework.
The notes on today’s homework was done using the overhead so students were STRONGLY encouraged to write, create and follow along as we completed the homework.
Vocab work:
We reviewed this week’s vocabulary lessons.
Students worked in teams and then submitted their best vocabulary card and then I had to guess it.
There was a tie between the baby chicks and the puppies for first place.
Reading Comprehension:
We graded our work on “main idea” and summarizing. Both areas of reading comprehension are key points in the may testing and used in the non-fiction text books they will use in middle school.
We then graded and discussed the Who Can Vote and How We Vote.
We ended our short day with some Seaman reading. Today Old Man Toby took off without payment when things started to look pretty bleak up in the Bitterroot Mountains.
Thursday night is the Soul Shoppe for parents night at Dublin Elementary.
Friday the day ends at 2:06.
FYI --- Tuesday was all about the election day. All of the 5th grade classes that have me for history and social studies had the chance to vote in private. The election among our 5th graders was just as class as the real one with President Obama earning a 2 vote victory with 38% to 36% with Roseanne Barr and her “Peace and Freedom” party earning 10% of the vote.
Here is our big election day technology day.

Week 12 and Day 49....
It was Monday before the big election day in California and throughout our country.
P.E. -- Volleyball was the big hit. Students came back telling all about their volleyball games.
Spelling pretest
CNN Students...
Final compare and contrast between President Obama and Mitt Romney. They also did a great job of encouraging the students to explore their website and find out all types of election information and statistics. It is called “Election Resources” and it is found on the Cnn Students homepage.
Seaman -- today we learned how the Corp finally made it to the Pacific Ocean. They read some of Clark’s journal entries and they are pretty humorous as he mocks the calling of Pacific Ocean “pacific.” The students are learning that winter time in the northern part of the United States can frequently be cold, dreary and wet.
Math
Prime factorization and Venn Diagrams to find GCF.
Here are our notes from today (12 pages!!)
Students must use the factoring trees on their homework this week.
Follow up to Caine’s Arcade.
This great video of a 9 year old with tons of time in the front of his dad’s store, tons of cardboard and duct tape. His completely homemade arcade has now made significantly over the $250,000 goal to help pay for Caine’s college.
Here is the original video, it is awesome.
Here is the video when Jack Black takes his kids to Caine’s Arcade.
Here is the 1 year anniversary of Caine’s Arcade and his creativity contest.
This is still in the early planning stages however the kids are thinking of making an arcade the last week of December before Winter Break for our buddies and for our fellow 5th graders.
Learning how to work on Engrade and then look at their hard earned grades. Some students were able to complete some of their still missing Brainpops. Three other students sent me emails to set up a day/time to retake a unit test(s) after they practiced on www.ixl.com to improve it.
Prepare for the week and begin working on the homework.
